Analyzing Banking Risk: A Framework for Assessing Corporate Governance and Risk Management provides a comprehensive overview of topics focusing on assessment, analysis, and management of financial risks in banking. The publication emphasizes risk management principles and stresses that key players in the corporate governance process are accountable for managing the different dimensions of financial and other risks. This fourth edition remains faithful to the objectives of the original publication. It covers new business aspects affecting banking risks, such as mobile banking and regulatory changes over the past decade—specifically those related to Basel III capital adequacy concepts—as well as new operational risk management topics such as cybercrime, money laundering, and outsourcing. This publication will be of interest to a wide body of users of bank financial data. The target audience includes the persons responsible for the analysis of banks and for the senior management or organizations directing their efforts. Because the publication provides an overview of the spectrum of corporate governance and risk management, it is not aimed at technical specialists of any particular risk management area. *** Hennie van Greuning was formerly a Senior Adviser in the World Bank’s Treasury Unit and previously worked as a sector manager for financial sector operations in the World Bank. Since retiring from the World Bank, he has chaired audit, ethics, and risk committees in various banks and has been a member of operational risk and asset-liability management committees. Sonja Brajovic Bratanovic was a Lead Financial Sector Specialist at the World Bank, after a career as a senior official in a central bank. With extensive experience in banking sector reforms and financial risk analysis, she led World Bank programs for financial sector reforms, as well as development projects. The book analyzes, compares, and contrasts tools and techniques used in risk management at corporate, strategic business and project level and develops a risk management mechanism for the sequencing of risk assessment through corporate, strategic and project stages of an investment in order to meet the requirements of the 1999 Turnbull report. By classifying and categorizing risk within these levels it is possible to drill down and roll-up to any level of the organizational structure and to establish the risks that each project is most sensitive to, so that appropriate risk response strategies may be implemented to benefit all stakeholders. "The new edition of this book provides a clear insight into the intricacies of corporate risk management and the addition of the case study exemplars aids understanding of the management of multiple projects in the real world." —Professor Nigel Smith, Head of the School of Civil Engineering, University of Leeds

The asymmetry of responsibilities between management and corporate governance both for day-to-day operations and the board’s monthly or quarterly review and evaluation remains an unresolved challenge. Expertise in the area of risk management is a fundamental requirement for effective corporate governance, if not by all, certainly by some board members. This means that along with board committees such as "compensation", "audit", "strategy" and several others, "risk management" committees must be established to monitor the likelihood of certain events that may cause the collapse of the firm. Risk Management and Corporate Governance allows academics and practitioners to assess the state of international research in risk management and corporate governance. The chapters overlay the areas of risk management and corporate governance on both financial and operating decisions of a firm while treating legal and political environments as externalities to decisions undertaken.
