A reformed ex-con uncovers murder in his small-town New England garden in this 1956 hard-boiled mystery by the author of Waterfront. After spending time in Europe and Africa—and inside a British prison—Don Ivy is back in his New England hometown, the village of Newbury. He recently inherited the family estate, and now that winter is over and spring has sprung, it’s time for him to tidy up the yard. Unfortunately, someone’s left a corpse in one of the flower beds. When the police arrive, they’re quickly suspicious of Ivy due to his troubling reputation. It also doesn’t help Don’s case when more bodies begin to appear. So, with the authorities in an uproar, he begins searching for answers to clear his name. And if Ivy doesn’t uncover the truth soon, the cops will certainly lock him up—or someone will ensure he takes a long dirt nap.

A fascinating exploration of the roles many spy novelists played during World War II and the influence of intelligence work on their writing. World War II deception operations created elaborate fictions and subterfuges to prevent the enemy from apprehending the true targets and objectives of Allied forces. These operations shortened the war considerably and saved countless lives—and they were often invented, proposed, and sometimes executed by creative minds that would come to be known worldwide for their spy novels. In Counterfeit Spies: How World War II Intelligence Operations Shaped Cold War Spy Fiction, Oliver Buckton reveals the involvement of writers in wartime deceptions and shows how those operations would later impact their work. He also examines how the details, personnel, and methods of the GARBO network, Operation Mincemeat, Philby’s treason, Operation Bodyguard, and more were translated from real life into spy fiction by these authors, necessitated by the Official Secrets Act which prevented writers from revealing their experiences in memoirs or other nonfiction works. Featuring Ian Fleming, Dennis Wheatley, Graham Greene, Helen MacInnes, John Bingham, and John le Carré, Counterfeit Spies is a captivating examination of the brilliant novelists who took wartime espionage and deception to another level with their enduring works that continue to entertain and fascinate readers today.

This book debates a crossover between the Gothic and the medical imagination in the Romantic period. It explores the gore and uncertainty typical of medical experimentation, and expands the possibilities of medical theories in a speculative space by a focus on Gothic novels, short stories, poetry, drama and chapbooks. By comparing the Gothic’s collection of unsavoury tropes to morbid anatomy’s collection of diseased organs, the author argues that the Gothic’s prioritisation of fear and gore gives it access to nonnormative bodies, reallocating medical and narrative agency to bodies considered otherwise powerless. Each chapter pairs a trope with a critical medical debate, granting silenced bodies power over their own narratives: the reanimated corpse confronts fears about vitalism; the skeleton exposes fears about pain; the unreliable corpse feeds on fears of dissection; the devil redirects fears about disability; the dangerous narrative manipulates fears of contagion and vaccination.

It was the 1950s in postwar America, and paperback books were the hot new product in the publishing industry. Of course, to stand out from the crowd and sell, one needed a gimmick. Into this newly exuberant market came a publishing house named Ace Books, with the seductive promise of two books for the price of one. It also had the eye-catching premise of two separate covers, joined at the spine like Siamese twins. Finished with one book? Flip the paperback over and begin again with a new novel, complete with its own package. It was something completely different -- and it sold! "Double Trouble" tours the short yet popular era of the Ace Mystery Doubles, and includes both author-title and title indexes for easy reference.
