Coupled Phenomena In Environmental Geotechnics

Introducing the Quality of Protection Modeling Language (QoP-ML), this book provides for the abstraction of security systems while maintaining emphasis on the details of quality protection . It delineates the steps used in cryptographic protocol and introduces a multilevel protocol analysis that expands current understanding. Every operation defined by QoP-ML is described within parameters of security metrics, therefore evaluating the impact of the operation on the entire system's security.

Environmental Geotechnics deals with a wide variety of applications, such as the characterization of polluted sites and landfill waste, the design of containment systems for subsoil pollutant control, radioactive waste disposal, geo-energy exploitation and bacteria-driven soil modification, among others. Reliable and effective predictions of the actual behaviour and performance of these very complex systems require a deep understanding of the coupled hydro-bio-chemo-mechanical phenomena that occur at very different scales. Future progress in the scientific state of the art and substantial advancements in the standard practices will therefore be closely related to the development of shared knowledge among different disciplines. The extension and refinement of theoretical modelling and the experimentation capabilities stimulated by geo-environmental applications more in general provide the framework for substantial advancements in the soil and rock mechanics fields. Coupled Phenomena in Environmental Geotechnics collects the special lectures and papers presented at the International Symposium on Coupled Phenomena in Environmental Geotechnics (Torino, Italy, 1-3 July 2013), which was organized by the Italian Geotechnical Society within the framework of Technical Committee TC 215 of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE). The book, with contributions not only from the geotechnical community, but also from related and complementary disciplines, is of particular interest to engineers and academics in geotechnical and environmental engineering.

This book gathers selected papers presented at the 8th International Congress on Environmental Geotechnics (ICEG), held on October 28 - November 1, 2018 in Hangzhou, China. The theme of the congress is “Towards a Sustainable Geoenvironment”, which means meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Under this theme, the congress covers a broad range of topics and provides an excellent opportunity for academics, engineers, scientists, government officials, regulators, and planners to present, discuss and exchange notes on the latest advances and developments in the research and application of environmental geotechnics.

In this spirit, the ATMSS International Workshop “Advances in Laboratory Testing & Modelling of Soils and Shales” (Villars-sur-Ollon, Switzerland; 18-20 January 2017) has been organized to promote the exchange of ideas, experience and state of the art among major experts active in the field of experimental testing and modelling of soils and shales. The Workshop has been organized under the auspices of the Technical Committees TC-101 “Laboratory Testing”, TC-106 “Unsaturated Soils” and TC-308 “Energy Geotechnics” of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. This volume contains the invited keynote and feature lectures, as well as the papers that have been presented at the Workshop. The topics of the lectures and papers cover a wide range of theoretical and experimental research, including unsaturated behaviour of soils and shales, multiphysical testing of geomaterials, hydro–mechanical behaviour of shales and stiff clays, the geomechanical behaviour of the Opalinus Clay shale, advanced laboratory testing for site characterization and in–situ applications, and soil – structure interactions.

Energy Geotechnics includes 97 technical papers presented at the 1st International Conference on Energy Geotechnics (ICEGT 2016, Kiel, Germany, 29-31 August 2016). The contributions provides significant advances and critical challenges facing the areas of fundamentals, constitutive and numerical modelling, testing techniques and energy geotechnics applications. Energy Geotechnics contains seven regular sessions and six minisymposia, with contributions on discrete and continuum based modelling as well as investigations based on experimental studies at various scales. The papers on discrete and continuum based modelling examine the behaviour of gas hydrate sediments, cyclic and Themo-Hydro-Mechanical (T-H-M) modelling of energy piles, non-linear behaviour of energy geo-storage and geo-structures, deformation of geomaterials, modelling of borehole heat exchangers and energy walls, analysis of hydraulic fracturing and discontinuities in reservoirs, engineering problems involving gas hydrates sediments, and modelling of environmental impact of energy geotechnical processes.

This book contains the contributions to the Second European Conference on Unsaturated Soils, E-UNSAT 2012, held in Napoli, Italy, in June 2012, and includes more than one hundred papers, addressing three thematic areas: experimental, modelling, and engineering.
