Most of the information on the functional role, structure and molecular biology of creatine kinase is scattered in several hundreds of publications. The editors of this volume invited all authors who are most active at present in experimental research on creatine kinases to summarize their work and make the information easily available to a wider scientific audience, especially to young investigators who are entering this field. Since the functional role of coupled creatine kinases is directly related to the phenomenon of compartmentation and structural organization of metabolic networks, we also invited experts in the related areas to contribute to the volume. Almost all invited authors responded enthusiastically and the results of this collective work are presented here. For biochemists, biophysicists, physiologists, and medical research workers.

This volume places emphasis on the intricate interplay between creatine and creatine kinase function on one hand and proper brain function, neurodegenerative disease and/or neuroprotection on the other. The book, compiled by outstanding experts, provides a key reference summarizing the state-of-the-art in creatine and creatine kinase research. It is a must-read for understanding the links between creatine metabolism and neuroprotection as well as neurodegenerative disease.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) accounts for up to one-third of combat-related injuries in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to some estimates. TBI is also a major problem among civilians, especially those who engage in certain sports. At the request of the Department of Defense, the IOM examined the potential role of nutrition in the treatment of and resilience against TBI.

A guide to the techniques and analysis of clinical data. Each of the seventeen sections begins with a drawing and biographical sketch of a seminal contributor to the discipline. After an introduction and historical survey of clinical methods, the next fifteen sections are organized by body system. Each contains clinical data items from the history, physical examination, and laboratory investigations that are generally included in a comprehensive patient evaluation. No one has counted the enzymes in the human organism, and probably their profuse number can only be estimated from the restrictions the finite mass of genetic material imposes. Still, nu merous catalytic activities have been identified and investigated for their clinical relevance. After one century of such research, surprisingly, only a handful of enzymes has survived the stern trial of clinical application to find regular medical use. Dis regarding genetic defects, most of the diagnostically used en zymes participate in metabolic conversions fundamental to life: the utilization, transfer or fixation of vital nutrients or of cheJ,llical energy. Creatine kinase is central to the function of the mitochond rion, the cellular power generator. The wider distribution of this enzyme is linked to tissues whose physiology crucially relies on an adaptable supply of energy, notably skeletal muscle, the brain, and the heart. Just as these three tissues vary in their pre ference for different energy sources, each produces a different isoenzyme of creatine kinase. Accordingly, the finding of elevat ed creatine kinase activity in blood can lead to a variety of interpretations, but in practice the diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction is the major consideration.

This volume focuses on current evidence-based pharmacological treatments of various forms of pulmonary hypertension and provides a comprehensive review of the latest developments in this area. The first part of the book covers the definition, classification, pathophysiology, pathology, biomarkers and animal models of the disease, thus laying the conceptual basis for what follows. The middle section provides an overview of the established therapies, such as calcium channel blockers, prostanoids, endothelin receptor antagonists, phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors and inhaled nitric oxide. The last section explores novel pathways and emerging therapeutic approaches including soluble guanylate cyclase stimulators, Rho-kinase inhibitors, inhibitors of serotonin receptors and transporters, peptide growth factors, vasoactive peptides, modulators of redox equilibrium and cyclic nucleotide homeostasis, as well as immunosuppressive and anti-proliferative agents. Particular attention is given to the clinical applications of these experimental therapies, that are on the horizon. The book thus spans the continuum from basic science to clinical applications.
