The 3rd edition of this invaluable anthology features eight new essays, including six in the new technology section, "Virtual Talk: Composing Beyond the Word." Edited by Victor Villanueva and Kristin L. Arola. For the third edition of Cross-Talk in Comp Theory, Victor Villanueva recruited the expertise of colleague Kristin L. Arola in order to flesh out the discussion on composition and technology. The quick movement of the paradigm--from the personal computer to local-area networks to the rise of social networking--suggests the need to recall the talk and the cross-talk concerning computers and their products for composition. The award-winning Villanueva and his coeditor Arola have dropped nine essays from the second edition, reoriented others into new sections, and added eight new essays, including six in the new technology section, "Virtual Talk: Composing Beyond the Word." Cross-Talk in Comp Theory is a collection of pivotal texts that mark the rebirth of a field, composition studies, beginning with the rise of the process movement. It has been thrice revised to account for shortfalls and changing conversations. The second edition paid increased attention to the significance of gender, the rise in voices of people of color, and the move toward technology. The third edition deepened the conversation on technology and multimodal composing, while keeping most of what had been successful in prior editions of the collection. In this latest edition, we recognize that discussions of discourse have become commonplace. Meanwhile, issues of social justice--who we teach, how we teach, and who "we" are--have become much more prescient in our composition classrooms, as elsewhere. And, as technology evolves, so too do our discussions of the role of technology and multimodality in our classrooms. Composition studies is a rapidly growing and constantly changing field. At present, however, graduate students new to the field and writing teachers who want to make new connections between theory and practice have little choice of current reference works that define key terms in composition studies and provide information about the scholars and researchers who have shaped and are shaping the discipline. This book supplies this information in an easily accessible format and places both scholars and terms in the context of the field's development. Included are alphabetically arranged entries for 108 individuals who have developed the field and 128 terms central to the discipline. The first part of the book provides entries for leaders in composition studies. Each entry identifies the areas in which the scholar has contributed most influentially to the field and provides both a chronological overview of the person's contributions and a bibliography of representative works. The second part includes entries for terms that are problematic both for newcomers and for those already familiar with the discipline. The entries for the terms show how the disciplinary context has shaped the ways in which they have been used. The entries also indicate how established thinkers in composition studies and other disciplines have explained or defined the terms, provide examples of the terms in context, and list scholars often associated with them. An appendix includes entries for scholars from other disciplines who have contributed to the field.

Critical Expressivism is an ambitious attempt to re-appropriate intelletual territory that has more often been charted by its detractors than by its proponents. Indeed, as Peter Elbow observes in his contribution to this volume, “As far as I can tell, the term ‘expressivist’ was coined and used only by people who wanted a word for people they disapproved of and wanted to discredit.” The editors and contributors to this collection invite readers to join them in a new conversation, one informed by “a belief that the term expressivism continues to have a vitally important function in our field.”

Beyond the Frontier: Innovations in First-Year Composition is a compilation of the latest research in first-year composition presented at, and inspired by, the Rocky Mountain Modern Language Association’s “Beyond the Frontier” panels. The book is divided similarly into panels, with the editors having collected a sampling of the composition practices that will stand the test of time. The purpose of the book is to present the reader with innovative methods and techniques for incorporation into the first-year composition classroom, or simply to provide food for thought – passing the torch, as it were – so that new research can be conducted and new findings disseminated. The division of the book mimics the panels one would typically find on a particular day during the Rocky Mountain Modern Language Association Conference, providing the reader with a taste of what it’s like to be in the room with first-year composition scholars.

In a data-driven world, anything can be data. As the techniques and scale of data analysis advance, the need for a response from rhetoric and composition grows ever more pronounced. It is increasingly possible to examine thousands of documents and peer-review comments, labor-hours, and citation networks in composition courses and beyond. Composition and Big Data brings together a range of scholars, teachers, and administrators already working with big-data methods and datasets to kickstart a collective reckoning with the role that algorithmic and computational approaches can, or should, play in research and teaching in the field. Their work takes place in various contexts, including programmatic assessment, first-year pedagogy, stylistics, and learning transfer across the curriculum. From ethical reflections to database design, from corpus linguistics to quantitative autoethnography, these chapters implement and interpret the drive toward data in diverse ways.

In Plateau Indian Ways with Words, Barbara Monroe makes visible the arts of persuasion of the Plateau Indians, whose ancestral grounds stretch from the Cascades to the Rockies, revealing a chain of cultural identification that predates the colonial period and continues to this day. Culling from hundreds of student writings from grades 7-12 in two reservation schools, Monroe finds that students employ the same persuasive techniques as their forebears, as evidenced in dozens of post-conquest speech transcriptions and historical writings. These persuasive strategies have survived not just across generations, but also across languages from Indian to English and across multiple genres from telegrams and Supreme Court briefs to school essays and hip hop lyrics. Anecdotal evidence, often dramatically recreated; sarcasm and humor; suspended or unstated thesis; suspenseful arrangement; intimacy with and respect for one's audience as co-authors of meaning—these are among the privileged markers in this particular indigenous rhetorical tradition. Such strategies of personalization, as Monroe terms them, run exactly counter to Euro-American academic standards that value secondary, distant sources; "objective" evidence; explicit theses; "logical" arrangement. Not surprisingly, scores for Native students on mandated tests are among the lowest in the nation. While Monroe questions the construction of this so-called achievement gap on multiple levels, she argues that educators serving Native students need to seek out points of cultural congruence, selecting assignments and assessments where culturally marked norms converge, rather than collide. New media have opened up many possibilities for this kind of communicative inclusivity. But seizing such opportunities is predicated on educators, first, recognizing Plateau Indian students' distinctive rhetoric, and then honoring their sovereign right to use it. This book provides that first step.
