The volume explores the integration of language and society as reflected in the grammar of a language. Each language bears an imprint of the society that speaks it; language reflects speakers' relationships with each other, their beliefs, and their ways of viewing the world, as well as other aspects of their social environment, their means of subsistence, and even geographical features of the areas in which the language is spoken. The chapters in this book draw on data from the languages of Australia and New Guinea (Dyirbal and Idi), South America (Chamacoco, Ayoreo, Murui, and Tariana), Asia (Japanese, Brokpa, and Dzongkha), and Africa (Iraqw) to examine the ways in which the grammar of a language relates to societal practices. The volume begins with a general introduction that summarizes the main issues relevant to how language and societies are integrated, before later chapters explore specific points of integration in a range of diverse languages, including honorifics, genders and classifiers, possessives, evidentiality, comparatives, and demonstratives. The findings advance our understanding of how non-linguistic traits have their correlates in language, and how these change when society changes. The volume will be a valuable resource for scholars and students of typology, cultural and linguistic anthropology, and sociolinguistics and social sciences more widely.

Il libro delinea un percorso “sulle orme” delle tradizioni native nordamericane, alla ricerca della traccia di umanità di questi popoli, negata e soffocata dai processi di colonizzazione e assimilazione lungo oltre cinque secoli. La traccia che i tradizionalisti nativi hanno cercato è la stessa che gli antropologi hanno cercato. Questa ricerca, dai due diversi versanti, si è particolarmente intensificata con la ripresa delle tradizioni sciamaniche native nella seconda metà del Novecento e, nello stesso periodo, con la ripresa della ricerca etnografica dell’antropologia postcoloniale e postmoderna. Il percorso del libro si snoda su temi generali, quali i conflitti culturali relazionali tra Nativi e Bianchi durante l’epoca coloniale e su aspetti specifici, quali i confini delle riserve e dei territori nativi, le rivendicazioni contro le nuove forme di espropriazione e abuso di questi territori, così come la ripresa e la difesa delle tradizioni religiose sciamaniche dalle nuove forme di consumo e abuso spirituale. Il tema del conflitto tra le culture native nordamericane e la cultura dominante risulta pienamente leggibile soltanto da una prospettiva storica che non neghi quegli aspetti di mescolamento e di cooperazione che hanno “fatto l’America” nella collaborazione tra i protagonisti in gioco, su livelli molto diversi quali quello tecnologico, linguistico e religioso. Il libro pone l’attenzione su come la negazione di questa traccia di incontro, metissage e collaborazione tra culture sia un altro “marchio” del colonialismo moderno, che ha contrapposto “primitivi” e “civilizzati”, razze, religioni inconciliabili, culture essenzialmente contrapposte, categorie in conflitto.
