La programmation architecturale demeure méconnue ou sous-estimée dans ses fondements, ses apports et ses visées, tant elle reste attachée à un document appelé le « programme », alors que tout concourt à l’envisager comme un processus continu et collectif de définition du projet, de décisions et d’actions impliquant un grand nombre d’intervenants. En intégrant les enjeux de transition écologique et de participation, il s’agit de dépasser la seule obligation réglementaire à laquelle la programmation est souvent associée pour la concevoir comme une démarche stimulante pour les décideurs et les destinataires des espaces de vie ou de travail à réaliser, mais aussi rassurante dans la mesure où elle contribue à donner du sens à un projet, à en anticiper la faisabilité et à en réduire les risques et les aléas. En l’abordant de manière multidimensionnelle, le maître d’ouvrage qui initie un projet de construction ou de transformation d’un patrimoine existant peut ainsi consolider ses intentions et ses objectifs, garantir sa qualité et s’assurer de la pertinence du service rendu aux usagers. Cet ouvrage propose aux parties prenantes d’un projet l’adoption d’un langage commun leur permettant de travailler ensemble. Il s’adresse aux élus, maîtres d’ouvrage publics et privés, porteurs de projets, assistants à la maîtrise d’ouvrage, concepteurs, responsables d’établissement, ainsi qu’aux étudiants qui souhaitent se familiariser avec les démarches de programmation ou s’y former. Il est organisé en 10 chapitres transversaux et interdépendants. Chaque chapitre est composé de deux parties : « Fondamentaux » et « Méthodes et outils ». L’ouvrage est complété par 11 cas pratiques, présentés comme des récits de programmation qui parcourent un large spectre de projets, complexes ou plus modestes : équipements publics, culturels ou universitaires, projets de reconversion, bureaux et lieux de travail, habitat participatif, bâtiments mixtes associant des porteurs de projets publics et privés...

As elite communities in medieval societies the Military Orders were driven by the ambition to develop built environments that fulfilled monastic needs as well as military requirements and, in addition, residential and representational purposes. Growing affluence and an international orientation provided a wide range of development potential. That this potential was in fact exploited may be exemplified by the advanced fortifications erected by Templars and Hospitallers in the Levant. Although the history of the Military Orders has been the subject of research for a long time, their material legacy has attracted less attention. In recent years, however, a vast range of topics concerning the Orders’ building activities has become the object of investigation, primarily with the help of archaeology. They comprise the choice of sites and building materials, provision and storage of food and water, aspects of the daily life, the design and layout of commanderies, churches and fortifications, their spatial arrangement, and the role these buildings played in their environmental context. This volume contains ten articles discussing the archaeology and architecture of buildings erected by the three major Military Orders in different geographical regions. They cover most countries of Western Europe and include a number of important fortifications in the Levant. These studies break new ground in the investigation of the built fabric of the Military Orders. Written by noted international scholars this publication is an important contribution to modern research on these institutions, which, in their association of monasticism and knighthood, were so typical for the Middle Ages.

Founded in 1981 in Paris, Brunet Saunier Architecture is a French leader in the design of hospitals and large-scale public buildings. This publication is much more than a monograph. It is also a professional reference work, as hospital buildings make up a large portion of the showcased projects. Over the last ten years the architectural office has been developing a successful concept known as “Monospace”. The book discusses and analyzes this concept in detail, presenting trueto- scale floor plans, cross-sections, architectural views, and other information. The Monospace concept – which is based on a process of creative reduction down to essentials, i.e. “simplexity” – is adaptive rather than normative or prescriptive, and based on probabilities rather than determinism. It respects energy, even when it sometimes uses it. It takes the individual’s experience into account, and starts from the position of the subject. It also permits changing perspectives. This design concept should attract attention far beyond the borders of France.
