About The Book: Bruno Preiss presents readers with a modern, object-oriented perspective for looking at data structures and algorithms, clearly showing how to use polymorphism and inheritance, and including fragments from working and tested programs. The book uses a single class hierarchy as a framework to present all of the data structures. This framework clearly shows the relationships between data structures and illustrates how polymorphism and inheritance can be used effectively.

This text is an introduction to the complex world of the OOP with C++. It helps you understand the principles and acquire the practical skills of programming using the C++ programming language. Our aim is for you to gain sufficient knowledge and experience to perform simple useful programming tasks using the best up-to-date techniques and so we hope for it to be the easiest book from which you can learn the basics of real-world programming. Our fundamental assumption is that you wish to write programs for the use of others; hence, providing a decent level of system quality to achieve a level of professionalism becomes necessary. Consequently, the topics here dealt with is what one shall need in order to get started with real-world programming, and not just what is easy to teach and learn. Rest assured, there shall not be any wastage of ones time with material of marginal practical importance. If an idea is explained here, chances are, its because one is likely to come in need of it. This book emphatically focuses on the syntax of C++. Understanding the fundamental ideas, principles, and techniques is the essence of a good programmer. Only a well-designed code stands any chance of becoming part of a correct, reliable, and maintainable system. Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 38 (thesis year 1993) a total of 13,787 thesis titles from 22 Canadian and 164 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 38 reports theses submitted in 1993, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.
