The Doha Round of WTO negotiations commenced in November 2001 to further liberalize international trade and to specifically seek to remove trade barriers so developing countries might compete in major markets. This book brings together an international team of leading academics and researchers to explore the main issues of the Doha Round trade negotiations, such as agriculture, pharmaceuticals and services trade. In particular, it looks at how the formation of the G20 has complicated negotiations and made it harder to balance the competing interests of developed and developing countries, despite rhetorical assertion that the outcomes of this Round would reflect the interests of developing countries. The authors examine both how developing countries form alliances (such as the G20) to negotiate in the WTO meetings and also explore specific issues affecting developing countries including: trade in services investment, competition policy, trade facilitation and transparency in government procurement TRIPS and public health agricultural tariffs and subsidies. Contributing to an understanding of the dynamics of trade negotiations and the future of multilateralism, Developing Countries and Global Trade Negotiations will appeal to students and scholars in the fields of international trade, international negotiations, IPE and international relations.

This book provides a longitudinal study of developing country involvement in multilateral trade negotiations. The trade regime established at the end of the Second World War did not cater for, and in some cases excluded, the developmental interests of the newly independent countries. This book offers a detailed analysis of: The first attempts to revise the trade regime in the 1960s through the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development and the formation of the Group of 77 to enhance their bargaining potential. The mixed coalition strategy, with the Cairns Group in the Uruguay Round of GATT. The new bargaining coalition, the Group of Twenty, that took on a much more confrontational and assertive bargaining position in the unsuccessful Doha round of the World Trade Organization. In part two, the author explores the possibility that economic globalization may finally deliver to developing countries what they had failed to achieve in five decades of multilateral negotiations - an opportunity to climb the industrialization ladder and achieve development. The book offers a proposal for revising the format of trade negotiations in a way that helps overcome stalemates and deadlocks. Trade, Development and Globalization will be of interest to students and scholars of international trade, trade and development, negotiation, global governance, political economy, international relations and economics.

This book brings together a collection of papers that Robert M Stern and his co-authors have written in recent years. The collection addresses a variety of issues pertinent to the global trading system. One group of papers deals with globalization in terms of what the public needs to know about this phenomenon and the role of the World Trade Organization (WTO), whether some countries may be hurt by globalization, how global market integration relates to national sovereignty, and how and whether considerations of fairness are and should be dealt with in the global trading system and WTO negotiations. A second group of papers consists of analytical and computational modeling studies of multilateral, regional, and bilateral trading arrangements and negotiations from a global and national perspective for the United States and other major trading countries. The remaining papers include an empirical analysis of barriers to international services transactions and the consequences of liberalization, and issues of international trade and labor standards.
