The Corner of Death is presented to you in honor of the 100th anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia (28th October 1918). The novel is based on true events with an extensive non-fiction background aimed at military history of the Second World War and the role Czechoslovakia played in it. The main story line evolves around a strong Slovak female character that goes through fighting on the Eastern Front to ultimately reunite with her love and fight the enemy at home. The Corner of Death explains in detail the birth of and hardships Czechoslovakia had to go through throughout its existence with a deeper focus on the Second World War and the aftermath that followed. A significant part of the book is dedicated to war events in Slovakia and its Liptov region. This novel is definitely suitable for "war geeks", but also to the wider public that is interested in the Second World War, the Eastern Front and the role of smaller countries that performed great deeds to defeat the common enemy. It will be especially interesting for Brits, French, Germans, Poles, Russians, Ukrainians, Czechs, Slovaks and Americans, because the book goes deeper in telling stories of events connected with these nations. The Corner of Death is suitable for children, but it does not idealize war and it shows it as it really was... a horrible part of human history. This novel is strongly antifascist and anticommunist, it shows what war heroes did and how they were treated after the war, which will be a shocker for the reader. As history was falsified for four decades of socialism in Czechoslovakia, I considered it my duty to work hard, perform an extensive research and create this book to set things straight, to tell you the story of the country I was born in, stories of heroes that were never truly honored and show that once upon a time, there was a small democratic country that wanted nothing more than its freedom and it fought hard to regain it back. You can find more information regarding the book on this website: http://www.cornerofdeath.eu

The crime-infested intersection of West Fayette and Monroe Streets is well-known--and cautiously avoided--by most of Baltimore. But this notorious corner's 24-hour open-air drug market provides the economic fuel for a dying neighborhood. David Simon, an award-winning author and crime reporter, and Edward Burns, a 20-year veteran of the urban drug war, tell the chilling story of this desolate crossroad. Through the eyes of one broken family--two drug-addicted adults and their smart, vulnerable 15-year-old son, DeAndre McCollough, Simon and Burns examine the sinister realities of inner cities across the country and unflinchingly assess why law enforcement policies, moral crusades, and the welfare system have accomplished so little. This extraordinary book is a crucial look at the price of the drug culture and the poignant scenes of hope, caring, and love that astonishingly rise in the midst of a place America has abandoned.

'One of the great British novels of the twentieth century: a narrative of extraordinary reach, power and beauty' Sarah Waters The nuns who enter a medieval Norfolk convent are told to renounce the world, but the world still finds ways to trouble them, whether it is through fire, floods, pestilence, a collapsing spire, jealous rivalries, a priest with a secret or a plague of caterpillars. As we follow their daily lives over three centuries, this masterpiece of historical fiction re-creates a world run by women. 'As an act of imagined history this novel has few rivals. Also, as it happens, a work of high, frequent comedy' George Steiner, The Times Literary Supplement 'Spellbinding . . . She can't bear to ignore the kindly old woman, who has been trying to reach her friend through the church inbox, but she also can't bring herself to break the bad news. The world thinks they're dead. The world is wrong. Deacon Tucker is a dead man walking. A former black ops agent, he was disavowed and stripped of all honor before being recruited as a Gravedigger. But his honor and good name no longer matter, because no one knows he’s alive, and he’ll never get the recognition he deserves. His mission is simple: save the world or die trying. And for God’s sake, don’t ever fall in love. That’s a rule punishable by death. The kind of death a man can’t be brought back from. Tess Sherman is the only mortician in Last Stop, Texas. She has no idea how Deacon Tucker ended up in her funeral home, but she’ll eat her hat if he’s only a funeral home assistant. Deacon is dangerous, deadly, and gorgeous. And she knows her attraction to him can only end in heartache. Deacon is on a mission to stop the most fatal terror attack the world has ever known—what’s known as The Day of Destiny—a terrorist’s dream. But when he discovers Tess has skills he can use to stop them, he has to decide if he can trust her with secrets worth dying for. And, most important, he has to decide if he can trust her with his heart.
