This insightful book presents and discusses the dialogues that took place in the New Directions in Middle Level Education Research session at the 2022 Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE) conference. Carefully crafted and expert-led chapters draw upon four recent studies that were published in Research in Middle Level Education Online, the research journal of AMLE, and which were featured in a roundtable discussion at the 2022 AMLE conference. Each section of the book includes one of the four studies accompanied by two companion pieces offering different perspectives on the work. In the companion essays, the original authors enrich and extend their research by incorporating feedback from the conference session discussions, revisiting their findings and conclusions, considering alternative approaches to further research, and proposing new or clarified implications for practice. The book also comprises contributions from middle level education experts, who offer responses to each study, offering perspectives, critiques, and commentaries. Reflecting the generative, dialogic, knowledge-building process that took place at the AMLE conference, it showcases the collaborative work of middle level researchers who draw ideas and inspiration for their studies from prior research and accounts of practice, as well as their own experiences in the field. This book is an excellent resource for researchers, doctoral students, and academics in the fields of middle level education, educational research, and research methods in education.

The seventh edition of this book is revised as per guidelines of National Medical Commission in accordance with the Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) of Physiology. In highly simplified language, it explores links with Pathophysiology and Medicine, focusing on early clinical exposure to students, and gearing them towards holistic patient management. This book continues to be must-have for all undergraduate medical students as it prepares them for both theory and viva-voce examinations. It is also useful for paramedical, dental, homeopathy and ayurveda students, besides those preparing for PG entrance examinations. • Logical flow, in easy-to-understand language and systemic presentation of complete theory in Question-Answer format helps in revision and self-assessment before examination. • Substantially increased visual representations in the form of diagrams, tables, and charts to facilitate quick assimilation, learning and greater retention of knowledge. • Clinical Case Studies that draw from the theory covered in the book and impart practical-focused learning. • Significant content enhancement and re-organization in line with revised syllabus, to ensure continued relevance, completeness, and renewed focus on application-based learning. • New chapter have been added on Integrated Physiology as per CBME curriculum. • Comprehensive treatment highlighting horizontal and vertical integration of topics to foster solid understanding. • Chapter-wise exhaustive coverage of topics and mapping with CBME via specific competency codes. • Pointwise, specific, and detailed-illustrated answers to progressively building-up, intuitive questions on each topic. • Insertion of 86 Clinical Case Studies with Question-and-Answer Mapping and Problem-based Learning, prepare students for National Exit Test (NExT) examinations and facilitate an integrated approach that lays a strong foundation for academics and practice.

This book first appeared in English in 1983, as a translation of the 20th Edition of the long-established German textbook Physi%gie des Menschen. In this new English edition the text has been fundamentally "rejuvenated", to bring it up to date with the rapid advances in many areas of physiology and to incorporate many helpful suggestions from both readers and colleagues. In its scope and didac tic goals, the book remains as we set forth in the Preface to the First Edition, which follows. First, the content was substantially reorganized. The general aspects of cell physiol ogy and intercellular communication, which underlie the functions of all organs, were extracted from the various chapters and brought together in a separate intro ductory section. We are most grateful to our colleague J. DUDEL for undertaking this task. The second step was to make the text more concise in several places (for instance, the motor and somatovisceral systems previously occupied two chapters and have now been condensed into one). By these processes of condensation and distillation of the passages on general cell physiology, space was made for the necessary addi tions and expansions, with only a slight change in the overall length of the book.
