Oirat-Kalmyk are Western Mongols that since the late 14th century stand in opposition to the Eastern Mongols like Khalka, Tümed, Buryat etc. They dominated for hundreds of years the western Central Asian steppes often in a fighting competition with Khazaks, Nogai and other Turkic nomadic tribes. The Dzungar Khanat of the Oirat was destroyed by Manchu China in 1757, but the death throes for the Oirat and Kalmyk community came in the middle 20th century when the limitless steppes became divided between socialist states with closed or at least fixed borders. Different groups of the Oirat-Kalmyk today live in four different states in a diaspora that threatens their common ethnic identity. In recent years borders that had been closed for decades opened again for mutual contacts and the Oirat again are looking for a common identity across borders, an identity that focuses on a common language, script and religion. The Oirat-Kalmyk are embedded in multi-ethnic social structures in which they have developed a great deal of adaptability to the environment as much as a conception of the own identity. This book presents various topics discussed at the international conference on Oirat and Kalmyk Identity in the 20th and 21st century at the Göttingen State- and University Library. The authors investigate Oirat cultural and linguistic heritage from different perspectives such as youth culture, internet language, dances and songs, as well as history, literature, linguistics and religion. The book contributes to the latest research trends in Mongolian and Central Asian Studies and their related disciplines.

Somalia, with seven endemic species, is one of the most important bird areas in Africa; it is also one of the least well-known. Birds of Somalia provides an atlas of 654 maps showing the distribution of all the species known from the country. Each species account details the species' preferred habitat, its relative abundance, and details of migration, breeding season and clutch size. Much of the ornithological content of the book is based on personal experience. About 70% of the observations on the maps were provided by the authors and they claim to have seen all but one of the 654 birds on the Somali list. Besides adding over 50 first time records to it, they were also responsible for finding and adding to science one new species and four new subspecies of birds in Somalia. Chapters summarise the available knowledge on bird migration and breeding seasons within Somalia. The records are astonishing when it is considered that they come from such a little-known country. The results of the rather limited amount of ringing carried out in the country are also summarised, and the recoveries of ringed birds are of extreme interest. Christopher Hemming contributes what amounts to a major treatise on the soils and vegetation of Somalia, Carlo Violani and Fausto Barbagli provide a historical review of ornithology and ornithologists, Professor Celia Nyamweru describes the geology, and Peter Robertson gives an up-to-date perspective on the state of bird and habitat conservation and the issues involved. A magnificent series of coloured plates by Martin Woodcock is included which depict 25 little-known birds special to the region, including the new species and races. There is also a selection of habitat photographs and excellent maps showing the topography, geology and vegetation of the country. There are further lists detailing hybrids, doubtful records, species offshore and borderline and unacceptable records. Of much interest and value to many, including museum workers and those not directly involved in ornithology, will be the gazetteer of localities throughout Somalia. Its value is greatly enhanced by being cross referenced in Somali (with the old and new spellings), English and Italian. Lastly, a full bibliography lists more than 550 titles.

This is a fictional story based on historical events occurring during WWII. Two of the primary characters are Norwegian Army captains Hans Lunsford and his friend Carl Romer. The story begins in the summer of 1939 as the clouds of war were drifting across Europe. Events occurring prior to the German invasion of Norway in April 1940 connect them with Adriana Strand, who is an attractive blond Norwegian working as a British spy in the German Embassy in Oslo. After the short war ends with the Norwegian defeat, King Haakon VII and the Norwegian government sail to England and begin to operate in exile. Hans and Carl subsequently hook up with Norwegian resistance groups and escape to the Shetland islands. There they meet up with Adriana, who is involved with the British Special Operations Executive directing operations of Norwegian and British commandos and saboteurs traveling by sea and air into Norway. Their missions were to operate clandestine radios, report German ship movements through the secret water passageway along the West coast of Norway, conduct sabotage operations, and rescue secret agents and British air crew from German or hostile Norwegian operatives. The story depicts all three individuals diverse missions into Norway from 1940 to 1942 when they frequently hide out in various secret hidden passages. The story ends in 1942 with Adrianas midnight mission to Norway. She parachutes into the darkness of the night with two other agents, but trouble ensues leaving Operation Black Shepherd in jeopardy. The success of the Allies in Northern Europe hangs in the balance.
