This handbook provides an authoritative, critical survey of current research and knowledge in the grammar of the English language. Following an introduction from the editors, the volume's expert contributors explore a range of core topics in English grammar, beginning with issues in grammar writing and methodology. Chapters in part II then examine the various theoretical approaches to grammar, such as cognitive, constructional, and generative approaches, followed by the chapters in part III, which comprehensively cover the different subdomains of grammar, including compounds, phrase structure, clause types, tense and aspect, and information structure. Part IV offers coverage of the relationship between grammar and other fields - lexis, phonology, meaning, and discourse - while the concluding part of the book investigates grammatical change over time, regional variation, and genre and literary variation. The handbook's wide-ranging coverage will appeal to researchers and students of English language and linguistics from undergraduate level upwards.

The handbook provides an overview of the current status of this research. In its first volume, the handbook begins by presenting the historical background of the theories in which the conceptions are rooted and then goes on to deal with the individual elements of the theory in detail (i.e. valency of the verb, complements vs. supplements, theta-roles, word order). Equal consideration is given to theoretical and empirical work. The idea of dependency grammars as well as other conceptions (i.e. word grammar, lexicase grammar) are presented in detail. The second volume begins with a comprehensive description of grammatical phenomena as seen from dependency and valency viewpoints. This is followed by chapters on the application of dependency and valency concepts in computer-based language processing. The remaining chapters deal with contrastive linguistics, grammaticography, lexicography, historical linguistics and other areas of linguistic research in which dependency and valency play a significant role.

Volume 2 treats, in great detail and, at times quite innovatively, the individual stages of development of the study of language as an autonomous discipline, from the growing awareness in 17th and 18th century Europe of genetic relationships among a host of languages to the establishment of comparative-historical Indo-European linguistics in the 19th century, from the generation of the Schlegels, Bopp, Rask, and Grimm to the Neogrammarians and the application of the comparative method to non-Indo-European languages from all over the globe. Typological linguistic interests, first synthesized by Humboldt, as well as the development of various other non-historical endeavours in the 19th and the first half of the 20th century, such as language and psychology, semantics, phonetics, and dialectology, receive ample attention.
