Desktop Grid Computing

This book presents common techniques used in numerous models, algorithms, and tools developed during the last decade to implement desktop grid computing. These techniques enable the solution of many important sub-problems for middleware design, including scheduling, data management, security, load balancing, result certification, and fault tolerance. Each chapter presents the sub-problems, discusses theoretical and practical issues, offers details about implementation and experiments, and includes references to further reading and notes.

This volume presents meta-heuristics approaches for Grid scheduling problems. It brings new ideas, analysis, implementations and evaluation of meta-heuristic techniques for Grid scheduling, which make this volume novel in several aspects.

Similar to a Computational Grid but departing from centralized components and significant administrative overhead, a Desktop Grid leverages the idle CPU time of desktop computers that are connected to the Internet. A middleware which is executed on every participating computer can build a Desktop Grid in a fully distributed way. This thesis defines goals, identifies issues and proposes solutions for the design of such a middleware. It focuses on the problem's algorithmic aspects, and its contribution is threefold. First, it develops a way to create an efficient Peer-to-Peer overlay that links the participants. Second, it describes a mechanism to counter free-riding. Third, it examines the properties of suitable jobs and the distributed workflow. Experiments with a middleware prototype in live environments show that considerable acceleration can be attained through distributed computing on a Desktop Grid.
