Determined To Succeed

We are, undoubtedly, in a time where we need to be determined to succeed. We are all aware of the challenges that we face through globalisation, an unparalleled pace of change, all of the factors that have provided the script for seemingly endless versions of 'Shift Happens'youtube videos and its companion pieces. I have argued elsewhere that people who say that recession will last for some notional period of time are simply misleading us. If we, as a nation, are not competitive there will be no end to recession; it will become decline. In the short term, we need to be determined to succeed in other ways. We cannot accept a situation where we have high levels of youth unemployment whilst facing skills shortages and having vacancies that we cannot fill. We need people who are highly (and appropriately) skilled: that is why this book is so valuable. (David Cameron)

Kevin Hough was an enthusiastic, successful athlete and student during high school and went to a Division 1 college on an athletic scholarship. Kevin was also a party animal. Even though the police arrested him twice for juvenile drinking during High School, his drinking too much alcohol had to do with an accident that almost took his life after his first semester in college had ended. An amazing comeback was made by Kevin even though three pieces of his brain had to be removed to save his life. After many months in two different hospitals, he decided to go back to college, against the advice from different doctors and counselors, and it was very difficult for him. With determination, he succeeded with needed academic assistance only a short time after he almost lost his life. Golf was not as difficult a comeback for him because the brain that was unharmed during the accident, was the side that retained the muscle memory. His college success in both areas is described and you can find out what all his needed advice and assistance was. During the country’s partition in August 1947, I, the Author, was a 4 or 5 year old child from a very affluent family. We lived in a village in the Lyallpur district of present-day Pakistan. Upon the country’s partition, my family abandoned all our belongings and migrated empty-handed to free India and to an uncertain future. With no idea of our ultimate destination, we moved from one refugee camp to another, and spent a little over a year en route in several such camps, where the family survived on free dry rations provided by the authorities. We finally settled in Kishan Pura, a village in the Firozpur district of Punjab at the end of October 1948, and struggled every day for survival. After each meal, we did not know how and from where the next meal for our large family would come, and this struggle continued for over a year.
