This book conceptualises the novel notion of ‘digital displacement’: the sudden pivoting to online technology in education caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The book documents this historical phenomenon in education and discusses the consequences for educator practice and educational strategies, in particular arts-based educators. Its content and scope cover both practice-based and academic frameworks, offering a scholarly investigation of the effect of the pandemic on embodied work, including drama, music, voice, dance and film, through a series of seven case stud-ies. The book also examines embodied online practice with a view to how COVID-19 has changed this in the long term.

Hydrostatic Transmissions and Actuators takes a pedagogical approach and begins with an overview of the subject, providing basic definitions and introducing fundamental concepts. Hydrostatic transmissions and hydrostatic actuators are then examined in more detail with coverage of pumps and motors, hydrostatic solutions to single-rod actuators, energy management and efficiency and dynamic response. Consideration is also given to current and emerging applications of hydrostatic transmissions and actuators in automobiles, mobile equipment, wind turbines, wave energy harvesting and airplanes. End of chapter exercises and real world industrial examples are included throughout and a companion website hosting a solution manual is also available. Hydrostatic Transmissions and Actuators is an up to date and comprehensive textbook suitable for courses on fluid power systems and technology, and mechatronics systems design.

How we lost control of the internet—and how to win it back. The internet has become a battleground. Although it was unlikely to live up to the hype and hopes of the 1990s, only the most skeptical cynics could have predicted the World Wide Web as we know it today: commercial, isolating, and full of, even fueled by, bias. This was not inevitable. The Gentrification of the Internet argues that much like our cities, the internet has become gentrified, dominated by the interests of business and capital rather than the interests of the people who use it. Jessa Lingel uses the politics and debates of gentrification to diagnose the massive, systemic problems blighting our contemporary internet: erosions of privacy and individual ownership, small businesses wiped out by wealthy corporations, the ubiquitous paywall. But there are still steps we can take to reclaim the heady possibilities of the early internet. Lingel outlines actions that internet activists and everyday users can take to defend and secure more protections for the individual and to carve out more spaces of freedom for the people—not businesses—online.

Development and Application of Classical Capillary Curve Theory shows readers how to improve chemical flooding recovery procedures in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) using sophisticated numerical modeling techniques for oil displacement that build on, and enhance, the accepted capillary curve in a novel way. The title presents research and technical data that amends the classical capillary curve, giving new impetus to chemical flooding research. By analyzing the capillary number experiment QL, the book models oil and water distribution in the micro-space of the reservoir core. Finally, the book discusses chemical flooding software, reservoir geological modeling, field tests, and a new technique of digital oil displacement testing being developed. Describes how to improve chemical flooding recovery procedures using sophisticated numerical modeling techniques for oil displacement that build on, and enhance, accepted capillary curve theory Presents the role of the capillary number experiment curve QL on oil-water distribution in the microscopic core of a reservoir Details novel digital techniques for oil displacement testing and modeling with global applicability in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) Gives information on chemical flooding software, reservoir geological modeling and field testing Provides advanced digital modeling techniques alongside insights gained through many years of practical experience in Chinese oilfields

Development of Online Hybrid Testing: Theory and Applications to Structural Engineering provides comprehensive treatments of several topics pertinent to substructure online hybrid tests. Emphasis has been placed on explaining the three frameworks: the host-station framework, separated model framework and peer to peer framework These have been developed within the Internet environment and are particularly suitable for distributed hybrid testing. In order to help readers to understand the essence of online hybrid testing and further to build up their own systems, an engineering practice has been introduced at the end of this book with the source code appended. Development of Online Hybrid Testing: Theory and Applications to Structural Engineering is primarily written for readers with some background in structural dynamics, finite elements, and computer science. Material that has previously only appeared in journal articles has been consolidated and simplified which provides the reader with a perspective of the state-of-the-art. Presents basics and implementations of time integration algorithms for online hybrid tests, along with the applications for real engineering projects Includes current progress on the development of substructure online hybrid tests as a means of investigating the seismic behaviour of large-scale structures Provides source code for the example tests

More and more vehicles are being electrified. Mobile working machines and heavy trucks are not excluded, and these machines are often hydraulically intense. Electrification entails new requirements for the hydraulic system and its components, and these requirements must be taken into consideration. Hydraulic systems have looked similar for a long time, but now there is an opportunity to advance. Many things change when a diesel engine is replaced with an electric motor. For example, variable-speed control becomes more relevant, electric regeneration becomes possible, and the use of multiple prime movers becomes an attractive alternative. The noise from the hydraulic system will also be more noticeable when the diesel engine is gone. Furthermore, the introduction of batteries to the system makes the energy more valuable, since batteries are heavy and costly compared to a diesel tank. Therefore, it is commercially viable to invest in the hydraulic system. This thesis revolves around the heart of the hydraulic system, that also is the root of all evil. That is the pump. Traditionally, a pump has had either a fixed displacement or a continuously variable displacement. Here, the focus is on something in between, namely a pump with discrete displacement. The idea of discrete displacement is far from unique, but has not been investigated in detail in combination with variable speed before. In this thesis, a novel design for a quiet pump with discrete displacement is presented and analysed. The results show that discrete displacement is relevant from an energy perspective for machines working extensively at high pressure levels and with low flow rates, and that a few discrete values are enough to make a significant difference. However, for other cycles, the possible energy gains are very limited, but the discrete displacement can be a valuable feature if downsizing the electric machine is of interest.

Automation is quickly becoming the standard across nearly every area of manufacturing. Pneumatic actuators play a very important role in modern automation systems, yet until now there has been no book that takes into account the recent progress not only in the pneumatic systems themselves but also in the integration of mechatronics, electronic cont
