Digital Restoration And Virtual Reconstructions

This book provides the opportunity to explore the variety of meanings, undertones and contextual connotations that currently pertain to the expressions of "virtual (or digital) restoration" and "reconstruction". The book focuses on the latest applications of virtual restoration and reconstruction in different areas of Cultural Heritage through the presentation and discussion of several case studies. The goal is to provide a broad perspective on the subject. The sample presented in this book has been indeed selected and evaluated referring to different disciplinary fields such as archaeology, architecture, and conservation while encompassing a variety of cultural and chronological contexts.

This edition presents the most prominent topics and applications of digital image processing, analysis, and computer graphics in the field of cultural heritage preservation. The text assumes prior knowledge of digital image processing and computer graphics fundamentals. Each chapter contains a table of contents, illustrations, and figures that elucidate the presented concepts in detail, as well as a chapter summary and a bibliography for further reading. Well-known experts cover a wide range of topics and related applications, including spectral imaging, automated restoration, computational reconstruction, digital reproduction, and 3D models.

This two-volume set CCIS 961 and 962 constitutes the refereed post-conference proceedings of the First International Conference on Transdisciplinary Multispectral Modeling and Cooperation for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage, TMM_CH 2018, held in Athens, Greece, in October 2018. 73 revised full papers of 237 submissions are included in these volumes. The papers of the first volume are organized in the following topical sections: the project of the rehabilitation of Holy Sepulchre’s Holy Aedicule as a pilot multispectral, multidimensional, novel approach through transdisciplinary and cooperation in the protection of monuments; digital heritage; novel educational approach for the preservation of monuments; resilience to climate change and natural hazards; conserving sustainably the materiality of structures and architectural authenticity; and interdisciplinary preservation and management of cultural heritage. And the papers of the second volume are organized in the following topical sections: sustainable preservation and management lessons learnt on emblematic monuments; cross-discipline earthquake protection and structural assessment of monuments; cultural heritage and pilgrimage tourism; reuse, circular economy and social participation as a leverage for the sustainable preservation and management of historic cities; inception – inclusive cultural heritage in Europe through 3D semantic modelling; heritage at risk; and advanced and non-destructive techniques for diagnosis, design and monitoring.

This volume represents the most important “deliverable” of the European-funded project Radio-Past (www.radiopast.eu). It is intended to disseminate the key results achieved in the form of methodological guidelines for the application of non-destructive approaches in order to understand, visualize and manage complex archaeological sites, in particular large multi-period settlements whose remains are still mostly buried. The authors were selected from among the project research “staff” but also from among leading international specialists who served as speakers at the two international events organized in the framework of the project (the Valle Giulia Colloquium of Rome – 2009 and the Colloquium of Ghent – 2013) and at the three Specialization Fora, the high formation training activities organized in 2010, 2011 and 2012. As such, the book offers contributions on diverse aspects of the research process (data capture, data management, data elaboration, data visualization and site management), presenting the state of the art and drafting guidelines for good practice in each field.

From the Archaeological Record to Virtual Reconstruction' describes the use of New Information Technologies (IT) for the analyses and interpretation of the archaeological record of an Iron Age fortified settlement, the San Chuis Hillfort (San Martín de Beduledo, Allande, Asturias, Spain).

This open access book offers a summary of the development of Digital Earth over the past twenty years. This book describes various new computer based approaches which can be exploited for the (digital) reconstruction, recognition, restoration, presentation and classification of digital heritage. They are based on applications of virtual reality, augmented reality and artificial intelligence, to be used for storing and retrieving of historical artifacts, digital reconstruction, or virtual viewing. The book is divided into three sections: “Classification of Heritage Data” presents chapters covering various domains and aspects including text categorization, image retrieval and classification, and object spotting in historical documents. Next, in “Detection and Recognition of Digital Heritage Artifacts”, techniques like neural networks or deep learning are used for the restoration of degraded heritage documents, Tamil Palm Leaf Characters recognition, the reconstruction of heritage images, and the selection of suitable images for 3D reconstruction and classification of Indian land mark heritage images. Lastly, “Applications of Modern Tools in Digital Heritage” highlights some example applications for dance transcription, architectural geometry of early temples by digital reconstruction, and computer vision based techniques for collecting and integrating knowledge on flora.
