However, the "tree" of knowledge of mathematics and related fields does not grow only by putting forth new branches. It also happens, quite often in fact, that branches which were thought to be completely disparate are suddenly seen to be related. Further, the kind and level of s9phistication of mathematics applied in various sciences has changed drastically in recent years: measure theory is used (non trivially) in regional and theoretical economics; algebraic geometry interacts with physics; the Minkowsky lemma, coding theory and the structure of water meet one another in packing and covering theory; quantum fields, crystal defects and mathematical programming profit from homotopy theory; Lie algebras are relevant to filtering; and prediction and electrical engineering can use Stein spaces. And in addition to this there are such new emerging subdisciplines as "experimental mathematics", "CFD", "completely integrable systems", "chaos, synergetics and large-scale order", which are almost impossible to fit into the existing classification schemes. They draw upon widely different sections of mathematics.

This volume is the Proceedings of the Third Korea-China-Japan Inter national Symposium on Ring Theory held jointly with the Second Korea Japan Joint Ring Theory Seminar which took place at the historical resort area of Korea, Kyongju, June 28-July 3, 1999. It also includes articles by some invited mathematicians who were unable to attend the conference. Over 90 mathematicians from 12 countries attended this conference. The conference is held every 4 years on a rotating basis. The first con ference was held in 1991 at Guilin, China. In 1995 the second conference took place in Okayama, Japan. At the second conference it was decided to include Korea, who hosted this conference of 1999. During the past century Ring Theory has diversified into many subar eas. This is reflected in these articles from over 25 well-known mathemati cians covering a broad range of topics, including: Classical Ring Theory, Module Theory, Representation Theory, and the theory of Hopf Algebras. Among these peer reviewed papers are invited survey articles as well as research articles. The survey articles provide an overview of various areas for researchers looking for a new or related field to investigate, while the research articles give the flavor of current research. We feel that the variety of related topics will stimulate interaction between researchers. Moreover the Open Problems section provides guidance for future research. A ring theory conference took place at the University of Waterloo, 12-16 June 1978, and these are its proceedings. This conference was held as a part of the Summer Research Institute in Ring Theory, at Waterloo, sponsored by the Canadian Mathematical Society. In soliciting speakers, and contributors to the Proceedings, we attempted to represent those portions of ring theory which seemed to us interesting. There was thus considerable emphasis on lower K-theory and related topics, Artinian and Noetherian rings, as well as actions and representations of groups on rings. Regrettably, we could only obtain one paper in the mainstream of commutative ring theory, but we believe that the lack of quantity is more than made up for by the quality. We also took the liberty of including a survey of results in a field which we feel deserves more attention by ring theorists, C* algebras from an algebraic point of view.

This book provides the first extensive and systematic treatment of the theory of commutative coherent rings. It blends, and provides a link, between the two sometimes disjoint approaches available in the literature, the ring theoretic approach, and the homological algebra approach. The book covers most results in commutative coherent ring theory known to date, as well as a number of results never published before. Starting with elementary results, the book advances to topics such as: uniform coherence, regular rings, rings of small homological dimensions, polynomial and power series rings, group rings and symmetric algebra over coherent rings. The subject of coherence is brought to the frontiers of research, exposing the open problems in the field. Most topics are treated in their fully generality, deriving the results on coherent rings as conclusions of the general theory. Thus, the book develops many of the tools of modern research in commutative algebra with a variety of examples and counterexamples. Although the book is essentially self-contained, basic knowledge of commutative and homological algebra is recommended. It addresses graduate students and researchers.
