Excerpt from Diocese of Mackenzie River The ecclesiastical history of this diocese is but a short one. It may be allowed, then, to preface it With some account of the progress of discovery in this region, previously to the commencement Of missionary enterprise. The explorers in the region now comprised in the diocese of Mackenzie River have been many and distinguished, so that even their names form a goodly list. The following may be referred to -mr. Samuel Hearne Sir Alexander Mackenzie Sir John Franklin and a second voyage in 1826, Admiral Sir George Back and Mr. King in 1833, Messrs. Dease and Simpson (1837 to Captain Lefroy Commander Pullen Sir John Richardson and Dr. Rae and others. The narratives of these voyages may be very Shortly reviewed. Excerpt from An Apostle of the North: Memoirs of the Right Reverend William Carpenter Bompas, D. First Bishop of Athabaska, 1874-1884, First Bishop of Mackenzie River, 1884-1891, First Bishop of Selkirk (Yukon) 1891-1906 IT has been a great joy to me to learn that a life of my dear friend, Bishop Bompas, is being prepared for publication. Quite apart from the pleasure which the perusal of the record of his life will afford to a large circle of friends, it is, I consider, in the interests of missions that the Christian public should know something more of the heroic work of that great Apostle of the North. That work was carried on in the seclusion of a prolonged isolation in the wilds of a land which was entirely shut out, except at rare intervals, from communication with the rest of the world. The Bishop loved to have it so. He had no care to speak to galleries or to come to the front. On the contrary, he retired before an approaching civilization, and when he saw it coming he retreated into regions beyond. Excerpt from Memoir of Bishop Mackenzie I find it recorded Of him, that, when a very little boy, he was accustomed to amuse his elder brothers with the exhibition of his arithmetical powers. Charlie was placed upon a table, and examined by these same elder brothers; hard questions were put to him, which he puzzled out in his head by some method of his own, and answered correctly, though without being able to say how he reached his results. His examiners had Slate and pencil to help them, but he generally got to the end Of the sum first, without any such help. Strange however to say, when he went to school, and was compelled to write his sums upon the prosaic Slate, his great superiority for a time disappeared, and it was only when he reached the higher level of algebra that his real mathematical ability made itself manifest.
