The Grammar Review Book guides English language learners inductively toward accurate understanding and use of grammatical structures. The basis for each unit is to fix a recurring grammatical error, for example, omission of subject (is beautiful today) or omission of verbs (She the best worker). The exercises incorporate the following four features: 1) they involve inductive rather than deductive thinking; 2) they activate analytical skills; 3) they are multi-sensory; and 4) they guide students in applying the grammatical focus in each unit to an original writing task.

Lessons on topics such as sentence fragments or parts of speech begin with several examples, and follow them with directed questions that help students arrive at a grammatical principle or rule. Following the questions and a brief discussion, each lesson has a definition, set in a box for emphasis. Lessons also contain boxed hints that aid students in understanding and retaining points of grammar. Exercises are both traditional and innovative, and provide practice as well as increase general knowledge. Students read sentences and pick out various points of grammar, but they also follow sentence patterns, write their own sentences, choose effective modifiers, or combine sentences. In all books, lessons build on each other: the lesson on compound sentences, for example, appears not long after students have learned what constitutes a sentence and right after they have been introduced to the conjunction. Each book also contains a Comprehensive Exercises section that provides review exercises and includes errors for students to correct. Book 3 includes work on dependent clauses, complex and compound-complex sentences, gerunds, participles, and infinitives. Grades 9-10.

An engaging and fresh take on the rules and politics of English grammar, written in lively prose. It goes a step further than most books on grammar by providing an overview of the field, with a discussion of historical and current debates about grammar, and how we define, discuss, and approach it. Presents a novel, inquiry-based approach to understanding speakers' unconscious knowledge of English grammar Makes lucid connections, when relevant, with current linguistic theory Integrates language change and variation into the study of grammar Examines historical sources of socially evaluative perceptions of grammar, as 'good' or 'bad', and notions of language authority Provides syntactic explanations for many modern punctuation rules Explores some of the current controversies about grammar teaching in school and the role of Standard English in testing and assessment
