Divorce, Annulments, and the Catholic Church: Healing or Hurtful? is the first published study on annulments with wide-scale usage of questionnaires and interviews. In addition to delivering a quantitative analysis of the responses to various questions (religious, social, or psychological), it explains in lay terms what annulments are and what the acceptable grounds are for annulment and takes you step-by-step through the process of obtaining one. This insightful book also contains case studies of individuals who have been hurt by annulments and offers suggestions on how people who want to contest an annulment should proceed.

"Over one million marriages will end in divorce this year. Over one million women will not live happily ever after. They will, even by conservative estimates, suffer a 24 percent decrease in living standards while their ex-husbands' fortunes drop by 5 percent at most." "Divorce hurts. But it hurts women a lot more than men. Especially from a financial perspective." "The emotional and financial dynamics of divorce are unlike those of any other life transition. Never do money and emotions intersect more painfully than during and immediately following divorce. At no other times are a woman's net worth and her self-worth so completely intertwined. During divorce negotiations, money becomes a symbol of all that has gone wrong in the marriage. Fear, pain, anger, and guilt all culminate in arguments about money." "Money becomes a reward for whoever succeeds at the emotional bartering game. But the emotional wear and tear of divorce often prevents women from making moneysmart decisions that will affect the rest of their lives." "Now Esther M. Berger, a Beverly Hills certified financial planner, offers women at every income level the critical information they need to know before, during, and after divorce. With advice on everything from making the first phone call to an attorney to negotiating alimony and child support to living on a post-divorce budget, MoneySmart Divorce helps you move beyond the emotional turmoil and confusion to discover that there is life after divorce." "MoneySmart Divorce teaches women which professional advisors you need - and how to find them; how to separate your emotions from your money during difficult financial negotiations; how to avoid classic "Divorce Dirty Tricks"; how to use the Two C's and Two D's to negotiate a moneysmart settlement; and how to formulate your own financial plan and make investment decisions that work for you." "The cost of divorce is incredibly high, in both financial and psychological terms. MoneySmart Divorce helps you acknowledge and confront the pain of divorce while at the same time providing the necessary tools for moving forward and taking control of your own financial life."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Few New Testament texts have had their meaning debated so vigorously as those in which Jesus discusses divorce: Matthew 5:32, Matthew 19:6, 9; Mark 10:9-12; Luke 16:18; and 1 Cor 7:11. From the early Church, through there formation, and into the present day, they have continued to rouse debate within the Churches and among believers. This work focuses on one aspect of that debate; namely, what Jesus has to say regarding divorce when his sayings are interpreted in their literary and historical context. To aid in this contextual understanding, the sayings are studied in the order in which they were written down in ancient times. Not every aspect of the debate therefore is addressed - nor could it be on an issue of such personal and pastoral complexity. Yet it is the challenge of biblical scholars to study the Word of God - in all its complexity - and to try to make that Word understandable. This work is offered to scholars and believers alike in the hope of adding to that understanding.

The first was to create a theory to support the practice of divorce mediation. This was born of my belief that the early proponents of divorce mediation had failed to sit down and ask the basic questions that the founders of any new field should pose. The result was that they concluded that if the problem was that divorcing couples had turned to adversarial divorce proceedings, the solution was to provide them with a nonadversarial one, or at least a less adversarial one. As a result, though they considered divorce mediation to represent a repudiation of adversarial divorce proceedings, they unwittingly accepted and incorporated into their thinking, and therefore into their practices, the answers given to those questions by our adversarial legal system and, with it, literally all the assumptions and all the values that informed and gave support to them. Worse, they unwittingly adopted and were then held captive by the picture of the world of divorce subscribed to by our adversarial legal system.
