Excerpt from Documents of American Catholic History A word should be said about the method used in collecting and editing the documents. First, with the exception of those from the colonial period, the arrangement is chronological. Since the Catholic missions of the three European powers that sent out colonies from the sixteenth through the eighteenth centuries are usually treated as separate units, it seemed best to break the chronology in this earlier section and list the entries under the headings of Spain, France, and England. It was also thought preferable to put two or more items on a single person together under the date of the first document rather than to separate them. Most of the material was naturally taken from sources in English, but for that written in foreign languages standard translations were used whenever they were available. In a few cases, however, translations were made either by the editor himself or were supplied to him through the kindness of friends. In the main the documents are printed just as they appear in the original source, although in some instances minor changes have been made either to improve the translations from foreign sources or to insert punctuation in certain English documents in order to clarify the meaning. For each item a single source has been cited in the introductory note, although in some instances the same document may be found in several collections. The translations of papal bulls and encyclicals generally give the student a reference to the official collections of the Holy See where the original may be read in Latin. While reference has frequently been made in the introductory notes to pertinent books and periodicals, no effort has been made to add a formal bibliography with each document. Most of the better books in American Catholic history contain bibliographies, and for all the essential works published up to three years ago the editor's A Guide to American Catholic History (Milwaukee: 1959) will serve the purpose. The editor is conscious of the fact that some readers may feel the need for more of a commentary than they will find in the introductory notes. An effort was made to supply the necessary background for a proper understanding of each document; nonetheless, a few over-all comments may help to clarify certain matters that recur in a number of the entries. This is especially true where the material touches on ecclesiastical points of a somewhat technical nature that are often not familiar to the lay reader. I have a thesis to evolve this evening more or less after the fashion of a teacher. My purpose is to argue that in American Catholic history we have an apt, if unused, means for the exalta tion and preservation of the Faith and for the spread of it among those over whose souls lies the pall of prejudice or infidelity. My contention about the exaltation of Catholicism through history needs no labor: heroes inevitably exalt the doctrines by whose power they were made strong and in whose interest they died. And our history is a record of heroes whose blood lies on our highways and byways, whose voices resound in our forests and on our plains. Preservation and spread of the Faith follow on after its glorification: but this is too facile a truism to be impressive. The point at issue needs argument. Excerpt from A Popular History of the Catholic Church in the United States IT is seldom, indeed, that the American Catholic author of a strictly Catholic book, has the gratification of adding a few words to the fourth edition of his fist book within a few months after its first issue. Yet, scarcely six months have passed since the first copy of the present volume was given to the public. The earliest edition was so quickly disposed of, that I had but little time to make a hasty re vision, when another was called for. Soon a third edition was demanded, and, now, a fourth. I feel that I am deeply indebted to the kindness and generous appreciation of our Catholic public. To express fully my warm gratitude, I am at a loss for fitting terms. Were my volume a novel, or a romance, I would not be so astonished at its success; but it is a book of dates, facts, and figures, a book in which imagination had little room for play, a book, in fine, standing on the solid ground of truth. But, after all, perhaps, truth is stranger than fiction. Nor are my thanks less due to the American, Canadian, and British press, for the friendly expressions of welcome, the manly, courteous reception accorded to my first literary venture in the book-world. But I thank, above all, those learned and venerable Rulers of the Church whose valued, weighty, and beauti ful words of encouragement, I'can never forget.
