Originally published in 1935, William Archer’s interest in dreams had persisted for over quarter of a century, for ten years of which he kept a careful record of his own dreams. These records alone form a valuable collection of material, of which Archer made good use in the writing of the book on dreams on which he was engaged at the time of his death; large parts of these dream-records are reproduced in this book. He left this book partly finished, partly in draft, and partly in the form of notes. In putting together this material the editor, Theodore Besterman, tries to carry out Archer’s intentions as closely as possible, and believed that he represented the book as he would have wished it to appear. It was unquestionably an important contribution to a difficult subject at the time, the result of many years’ study and reflection.

Does telepathy really exist? Milton Brener offers overwhelming proof that it does, with humans often communicating, sometimes over distances of thousands of miles, with no other means of contact possible. Intriguingly, he goes further. The announcing dream mentioned in the title has been documented worldwide. The dreamer is most often the mother of an unborn child, though it is at other times another family member. The child in utero often conveys that it is a deceased member of the family who claims to be returning. In many such cases, the baby is born with memories of the prior life, and investigations have often proved such memories to be accurate. Is this all imagination? Is there a scientific basis for any of it? Brener claims and convincingly shows that an aspect of quantum physics, known as entanglement, could well be the scientific basis for it.

The papers collected in this volume (including a comprehensive introduction) investigate semantic and discourse-related aspects of subordination and coordination, in particular the relationship between subordination/coordination at the sentence level and subordination/coordination – or hierarchical/non-hierarchical organization – at the discourse level. The contributions in part I are concerned with central theoretical questions; part II consists of corpus-based cross-linguistic studies of clause combining and discourse structure, involving at least two of the languages English, German, Dutch, French and Norwegian; part III contains papers addressing specific – predominantly semantic – topics relating to German, English or French; and the papers in part IV approach the topic of subordination, coordination and rhetorical relations from a diachronic (Old Indic and Early Germanic) perspective. The book aims to contribute to a better understanding of information packaging on the sentence and text level related, within a particular language as well as cross-linguistically.
