This is a set of two volumes covering a monograph on the current knowledge of phenomena and the theory and analysis of multiphase systems. The two books offer a systematic treatment of multiphase media which are, increasingly, the rule rather than the exception in modern industrial practice. The books offer a systematic treatment of energy, mass and momentum exchange in multiphase systems along with other applications which include shock hardening of metals, boiling heat transfer, critical flow of two-phase mixtures, combustion of fuel droplets, tertiary oil recovery and detonation of powders. The approach covers all transport processes of importance in multiphase mixtures and also covers the specific behaviour of these processes when subjected to the passage of transient waves.

The past decade has seen remarkable growth in research related to petroleum reseIVoir simulation. This growth reflects several developments, not the least of which is the increased interest in oil recovery technologies requiring sophisticated engineer ing. Augmenting this interest has been the broader availability of supercomputers capable of handling the tremendous computational demands of a typical reseIVoir simulator. The field of reseIVoir simulation incorporates several major facets of applied mathematics. First, in view of the varieyt and complexity of the processes encoun tered, it is imperative that the modeler adopt a systematic approach to establishing the equations governing reseIVoir flows. Second, the mathematical structure of these flow equations needs to be carefully analyzed in order to develop appropriate and efficient numerical methods for their solution. Third, since some aspects of the discretized flow equations are typically stiff, one must develop efficient schemes for solving large sparse systems of linear equations. This monograph has three parts, each devoted to one of these three aspects of reseIVoir modeling. The text grew out of a set of lectures presented by the authors in the autumn of 1986 at the IBM Scientific Center in Bergen, Norway. We feel that it is only appropriate to caution the reader that many of the ideas that we present in this monograph do not reflect standard approaches in petroleum reseIVoir simulation. In fact, our aim is to outline promising new ways of attacking reseIVoir simulation prob lems, rather than to compile another textbook for the mainstream."

Multi-phase flows are part of our natural environment such as tornadoes, typhoons, air and water pollution and volcanic activities as well as part of industrial technology such as power plants, combustion engines, propulsion systems, or chemical and biological industry. The industrial use of multi-phase systems requires analytical and numerical strategies for predicting their behavior. In its third extended edition this book contains theory, methods and practical experience for describing complex transient multi-phase processes in arbitrary geometrical configurations. This book provides a systematic presentation of the theory and practice of numerical multi-phase fluid dynamics. In the present second volume the mechanical and thermal interactions in multiphase dynamics are provided. This third edition includes various updates, extensions, improvements and corrections.

This book has been written for graduate students, scientists and engineers who need in-depth theoretical foundations to solve two-phase problems in various technological systems. Based on extensive research experiences focused on the fundamental physics of two-phase flow, the authors present the detailed theoretical foundation of multi-phase flow thermo-fluid dynamics as they apply to a variety of scenarios, including nuclear reactor transient and accident analysis, energy systems, power generation systems and even space propulsion.
