Written for middle school students, Suzanne Strauss Art's Early Times Series history books bring an easy-to-read style to the oftentimes difficult task of engaging students in the study of history. And now, full color maps and images throughout immerse students in a fully imaginable, long ago world of knights in armor, of kings, poets, and peasants. From barbarian invasions and the battles of Charlemagne's army to detailed descriptions of the everyday lives of monks and lords, The Story of the Middle Ages incorporates a comprehensive study of medieval society with a detailed look at what it was really like to be there. This comprehensive and highly readable volume traces the rising power and influence of the Christian Church, the development of nation states, the growth of towns, the creation of a middle class, the expanding role of women, the rise of universities, and great achievements in the domains of science, art, architecture, and letters.Beginning with the chaos that arose following the fall of the Roman Empire, The Story of the Middle Ages describes how various tribal societies - the Franks, the Saxons, the Norsemen, the Arabs - restored order in many parts of the Mediterranean world. The lively narrative is highlighted by colorful portraits of Clovis, Charlemagne, Alfred the Great, and other great warriors. But it was the Christian Church that maintained a form of the old Roman bureaucracy and stood as the guardian of law and order in most of southwestern Europe and Britain. This book explains the founding and teachings of the Church and describes the important role of monasteries in extending the power of faith as well as preserving scholarship and art. Important religious figures such as St. Augustine, St. Benedict, and St. Francis are portrayed, while the description of a day in the life of a monk further enriches the narrative.

Excerpt from The Story of the Middle Ages: An Elementary History for Sixth and Seventh Grades The point of view from which this book is written is perhaps sufficiently set forth in the introductory chapter, but it may fittingly call for an additional word in this place. It is, namely, the point of view of one who believes that the child about to undertake the formal study of American history in the seventh and eighth grades of our schools, needs first a preliminary sketch of the history of earlier times, - especially of the Middle Ages, - in order that our own history may appear in its true perspective and setting. In attempting to make intelligible to children the institutions and events of the Middle Ages, the author is aware of the magnitude of the task which he has essayed. He is, however, firmly of the opinion that the difficulty arises frequently not so much from an inability on the part of the child to grasp the essential ideas underlying medieval relations, as from the lack of a clear understanding of these on the part of the narrator himself, and the need of finding familiar nontechnical terms of definition. Whether the difficulty has been entirely surmounted in this work can only be determined by the test of use; but at least no pains have been spared in the effort. The new edition of The Story of Ancient Rome is now in color and has been revised and expanded to take account of recent discoveries and contemporary issues of scholarly debate. The history of Rome began in the eighth century B.C. when several clusters of villages on the hills overlooking the Tiber River merged into a single city and established a common meeting place known as the forum. A more colorful account describes how the city of Rome was founded by legendary twin brothers, Romulus and Remus, who were raised by a she-wolf. The Story of Ancient Rome chronicles in colorful detail both the documented history and the legends of the city that arose from humble beginnings to become the center of an immense empire encompassing two million square miles and spanning three continents.

The Early Middle Ages, the 500 years following the fall of Rome, was a violent time of invasion and war that saw the breakdown of society. Yet, this period saw important social and political changes, leading first to the civilization of the Late Middle Ages and the Renaissance and then to modern western culture.

At the beginning of the period Rome was old and worn out with misgovernment and evil living. But planted in this dying Rome there was the new and vigorous Christian Church which was to draw up into itself all that was best and strongest of the old world. The Germans were rude and uncivilized, but they were strong in mind and body, and possessed some ideas about government, women, and the family which were better than the ideas of the Romans on these subjects.
