Plant-based is best for health, go vegan to help save the planet, eat less meat... Almost every day we are bombarded with the seemingly incontrovertible message that we must reduce our consumption of meat and dairy - or eliminate them from our diets altogether. But what if the pervasive message that the plant-based diet will improve our health and save the planet is misleading - or even false? What if removing animal foods from our diet is a serious threat to human health, and a red herring in the fight against climate change. In THE GREAT PLANT-BASED CON, Jayne Buxton demonstrates that each of these 'what-ifs' is, in fact, a reality. Drawing on the work of numerous health experts and researchers, she uncovers how the separate efforts of a constellation of individuals, companies and organisations are leading us down a dietary road that will have severe repercussions for our health and wellbeing, and for the future of the planet. THE GREAT PLANT-BASED CON is neither anti-plant nor anti-vegan - it is a call for us to take an honest look at the facts about human diets and their effect on the environment. Shocking and eye-opening, this book outlines everything you need to know to make more informed decisions about the food you choose to eat.

In this second volume, Shari and Doug add to where they left off in their first cookbook, Eat Plants Love: Recipes for a Good Life. This new volume contains recipes from the Schmidts and also includes recipes from participants in the annual Good Life Challenge. Using new ingredients and techniques, this volume will help you make delicious, plant based comfort foods to add to your healthy meal repertoire. Doug had a heart attack at age 49. Wanting to avoid another heart attack, Doug and his wife Shari, sought information that changed their lives. Over a decade later, Doug is off of all medications and lost 60 pounds and ran his first marathon. What began as a goal to help prevent Doug from having future heart attacks has led them to now help others. They found out that not only does a plant based lifestyle prevent and reverse heart disease, the leading killer of 1 in 3 Americans, it also helps with type 2 diabetes, autoimmune issues, kidney disease and most chronic diseases from which Americans suffer. It even helps fight some cancers such as breast, prostate and colon cancer. They are now on a mission to help as many people as possible take control of their health and to live a rich and full life. In January 2018, they created and lead a 10 day plant based health health initiative for 1300 staff members from 35 different school districts and were featured on Good Morning America. In January 2020 they ran the challenge again. The number of participants exceeded 3800. What participants have said about Doug and Shari's 10 Day challenges: "Timing is everything. I had scheduled a physical months ago before knowing about this 10 day rescue. So Monday I had blood work done and I just now got my results. My cholesterol was 194 in 2014. Today it is 133. I am not on statin drugs. I just changed my diet. Whoa!" "I joined the challenge to start healing my body from the inside out. It wasn't about giving up food but just eating more of the right foods. This way of eating is by far the healthiest. Once you get over the detox of not having sugar, you begin to feel energized. So thankful for Doug and Shari Schmidt who have challenged and supported us all, every step of the way."

New York Times and USA Today Bestseller "Eat food, not too much, mostly plants." With these seven words, Michael Pollan—brother of Lori, Dana, and Tracy Pollan, and son of Corky—started a national conversation about how to eat for optimal health. Over a decade later, the idea of eating mostly plants has become ubiquitous. But what does choosing "mostly plants" look like in real life? For the Pollans, it means eating more of the things that nourish us, and less of the things that don’t. It means cutting down on the amount of animal protein we consume, rather than eliminating it completely, and focusing on vegetables as the building blocks of our meals. This approach to eating—also known as a flexitarian lifestyle—allows for flavor and pleasure as well as nutrition and sustainability. In Mostly Plants, readers will find inventive and unexpected ways to focus on cooking with vegetables—dishes such as Ratatouille Gratin with Chicken or Vegetarian Sausage; Crispy Kale and Potato Hash with Fried Eggs; Linguine with Spinach and Golden Garlic Breadcrumbs; and Roasted Tomato Soup with Gruyere Chickpea "Croutons". Like any family, the Pollans each have different needs and priorities: two are vegetarian; several are cooking for a crowd every night. In Mostly Plants, readers will find recipes that satisfy all of these dietary needs, and can also be made vegan. And the best part: many of these dishes can be on the table in 35 minutes or less! With skillet-to-oven recipes, sheet pan suppers, one pot meals and more, this is real cooking for real life: meals that are wholesome, flavorful, and mostly plant based.
