Economic Survey Of Latin America And The Caribbean 2006 2007

The publication surveys the main economic events and developments of 2006 and the first half of 2007 in the light of the region’s recent economic performance. The fifty-ninth edition of the survey is aimed to provide further inputs for the economic debates concerning means of promoting a rapid, sustainable growth process capable of creating conditions conducive to an improvement in the living conditions in the region. It also describes various aspects of the regions economic growth dynamics. The tables provided in the statistical appendix provide ready access to data for recent years and facilitate the creation of spreadsheets. The edition is supplemented by a CD-ROM.

ECLAC has been publishing the Economic Survey for 59 years now. The first edition of this report was drawn up under the Executive Secretary's supervision at the behest of the Commission, which requested that an economic survey of Latin America be prepared. That document was the new Economic Commission's first contribution to an understanding of the region's development process. The Survey thus embodies the Commission's fulfilment of one of the specific purposes for which it was created by undertaking or sponsoring the collection, evaluation and dissemination of ... economic, technological and statistical information ... on the region. In fact, the former Director of the Central Bank of Argentina, Ra︢l Prebisch, arrived in Santiago as a consultant to work on the 1948 edition of the Economic Survey. Ever since then, the Survey has served as a witness and as a leading actor in the economic development of Latin America and the Caribbean. This flagship publication of ECLAC, which Alberto Hirschman once described as the Latin American manifest is one of the most frequently quoted reports of its kind in the region. As the sixtieth anniversary of the Economic Survey for Latin America and the Caribbean approaches, it has been restructured with a view to making it even more useful for its readers. In a reformulation that harks back to the early editions of the Survey, from now on the analysis of the current economic situation that is a customary part of this publication will be supplemented by an additional section.

The 2018 edition of the Economic Survey of Latin America and the Caribbean, its seventieth issue, consists of three parts. Part I outlines the region's economic performance in 2017 and analyses trends in the early months of 2018, as well as the outlook for the rest of the year. It examines the external and domestic factors that have influenced the region's economic performance, analyses the characteristics of economic growth, prices and the labour market, and draws attention to some of the macroeconomic policy challenges of the prevailing external conditions, amid mounting uncertainty stemming mainly from political factors. Part II of this edition, which has three chapters, analyses the dynamics of investment and its determinants, with a view to identifying the different variables on which public policy can act to influence the trajectory of investment. Part III contains notes relating to the economic performance of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean in 2017 and the first half of 2018, together with their respective statistical annexes.

The Economic Survey is one of ECLAC's flagship publications, and has been issued since 1948. This new edition covers the region's economic performance in 2007 and the first semester of 2008, and suggests growth estimates for this year.

This year's edition of the Economic survey of Latin America and the Caribbean,the fifty-seventh in this series, is divided into two parts. The first analyses the main features of the regional economy, while the second examines the situation in the individual countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. The full statistical appendix is published in electronic format for ease of data processing.

It examines the external and internal factors influencing the region’s economic performance and highlights some of the macroeconomic policy challenges that have arisen in an external context of weak growth and high levels of uncertainty. Part II analyses the challenges that the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean face at the domestic and international levels in mobilizing financing for development. On the domestic front, slower growth and tighter fiscal restrictions pose significant challenges for the mobilization of resources. Externally, the classification of many of the region’s countries in the middle-income category limits their access to concessional external financing or international support. Part III of this publication contains the notes relating to the economic performance of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean in 2015 and the first half of 2016, together with their respective statistical annexes.
