The first chapter is a regional overview, including an analysis of economic policies applied in different countries, and their performance in terms of economic activity, inflation, labor markets, trade and capital flows. The following three chapters deal with the issue of macroeconomic volatility and its relevance in Latin America, empirical evidence of volatility and crisis in the region, and volatility, cycles and policy response. The 2018 edition of the Economic Survey of Latin America and the Caribbean, its seventieth issue, consists of three parts. Part I outlines the region's economic performance in 2017 and analyses trends in the early months of 2018, as well as the outlook for the rest of the year. It examines the external and domestic factors that have influenced the region's economic performance, analyses the characteristics of economic growth, prices and the labour market, and draws attention to some of the macroeconomic policy challenges of the prevailing external conditions, amid mounting uncertainty stemming mainly from political factors. Part II of this edition, which has three chapters, analyses the dynamics of investment and its determinants, with a view to identifying the different variables on which public policy can act to influence the trajectory of investment. Part III contains notes relating to the economic performance of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean in 2017 and the first half of 2018, together with their respective statistical annexes.

The publication surveys the main economic events and developments of 2006 and the first half of 2007 in the light of the region’s recent economic performance. The fifty-ninth edition of the survey is aimed to provide further inputs for the economic debates concerning means of promoting a rapid, sustainable growth process capable of creating conditions conducive to an improvement in the living conditions in the region. It also describes various aspects of the regions economic growth dynamics. The tables provided in the statistical appendix provide ready access to data for recent years and facilitate the creation of spreadsheets. The edition is supplemented by a CD-ROM.

This publication comes at a critical point in the economic development of the Latin American and Caribbean region. A growth phase that the region's recent history cannot equal in nature and duration has come to an end and output is contracting. The first part of this edition looks at the channels through which the crisis is affecting the economies of the region and its impact on variables such as economic growth, employment and external-sector indicators. It also discusses the strengths and weaknesses of the countries and concludes with a discussion of the outlook for the second half of the year. The second part discusses policies for creating quality jobs, including challenges and opportunities for labor institutions and labor markets, labor-market policies for youth and women. This CD-ROM also contains the electronic versions of the printed publication. The statistical information reflects data available up to 30 June 2009.

Published since 1948, this report examines various aspects of the previous year’s macroeconomic situation in the region and makes projections for the coming months. The 2015 edition of this report outlines the region’s economic performance in 2014 and analyses trends in the first half of 2015, as well as the outlook for the rest of the year. It also analyses the dynamics of investment in Latin America and the Caribbean, the relationship between investment and the business cycle, the role of public investment, infrastructure gaps and the challenges in financing private investment.

In 2009, the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean experienced the brunt of the global financial crisis on their levels of activity. However, since the second half of the that year, most countries in the region just begun a vigorous recovery that should strengthen with a regional GDP expansion of approximately 5.2 per cent. The factors behind a more positive performance are both external and internal in nature. Amongst the former can be included the continued dynamism of some key Asian economies, whose sustained demand for products from this region has created important conditions for a recovery in exports, especially in the case of South America.
