Excerpt from Home Economics in Elementary and Secondary Schools This book is planned primarily as a text-book for students in special methods courses in home economics in colleges and normal schools. In addition it should be valuable to experienced teachers as it contains discussions of many of the practical teaching problems that they meet in their daily work, as well as a more general study of the purposes and results of home economics teaching. Teachers of special methods courses in home economics have been handicapped because little material on the principles and methods of teaching home economics has been available for use as text or reference books for these classes. This has resulted not only in less effective teaching in these courses, due to the necessity of using a lecture method rather than a problem method in the class, but also in the slow development of a common understanding or interpretation of some of the most fundamental problems in home economics teaching. This book has been written with the hope that it will be of assistance in both of these situations. It is based on several years' experience in teaching a special methods course in which many of the students have been experienced teachers. The point of view that is emphasized and the conclusions that are reached are the results of the discussions carried on in these classes. It is because this material embodies or reflects the consensus of opinion of many persons who have received their training in schools in different parts of the country that it is offered as a first step toward a more scientific study of the teaching of home economics. Excerpt from Economics Industrial History Secondary Schools For the last five years, the author has earnestly believed that a beginner in economics had a right to find the subject closely related to his own experience, and that of his neighbors, so that he would seem to himself to be studying the industrial life of actual men and women more than books about this industrial life. Excerpt from Economics in the Secondary School This little book has grown out of the author's interest in economics, his conviction that ignorance of its elementary principles is at the bottom of much of the faulty legislation and administration in our country, and finally, out of his own experience in teaching the subject to secondary-school pupils. To test his own beliefs on the matter he has read widely on the subject and made extensive inquires, with the result that his own conviction, based on experience, have been confirmed. In 1912 he sent out a questionnaires to the secondary-school teachers of economics in all parts of the country and received seventy-five replies, which furnished him with a large amount of information which has been of use in the preparation of this study. The author desires to take this opportunity to thank his correspondents, among whom are many of the leading teachers of economic in the secondary schools, for the invaluable help they have given him in the investigation of this topic. Excerpt from The Elements of Economics This book has been written in response to a demand for a somewhat shorter and more elementary work than the Introduction to the Study of Economics, which the author brought out in 1897. In order to meet this demand, it was necessary to make a substantially new book, in which the substance of doctrine and the gen eral groundwork remain the same, but the method of treating most subjects has been more or less radically altered. Less space has been devoted to purely theo retical questions and more descriptive and illustrative material has been presented. It is hoped that the present treatise will meet the needs of a relatively short course for beginners in eco nomics. As the work stands, it is probably extensive enough for the longest courses now given in secondary schools. If it is found too long for some of the shorter courses, the instructor can easily adapt it to the needs of his class by making a few omissions. The first chap ter can be treated in an introductory talk or lecture on the first day that the class meets; and the tenth and fifteenth chapters, treating, as they do, topics that are seldom discussed at length in an elementary work, can be readily omitted. With a few changes of this sort. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
