Eimi

A reissue of E. E. Cummings's long-unavailable, yet pointed and moving story of a journey through Soviet Russia. Unavailable for more than fifty years, EIMI finally returns. While sometimes termed a "novel," it is better described as a novelistic travelogue, the diary of a trip to Russia in the 1930s during the rise of the Stalinist government. Despite some contempt for what he witnesses, Cummings's narrator has an effective, occasionally hilarious way of evoking feelings of accord and understanding. As Ezra Pound wrote, Cummings's Soviet Union is laid "out there pellucidly on the page in all its Slavic unfinishedness, in all of its Dostoievskian slobberyness....Does any man wish to know about Russia? 'EIMI'!" A stylistic tour de force, EIMI is a mélange of styles and tones, the prose containing many abbreviations, grammatical and syntactical shifts, typographical devices, compounds, and word coinages. This is Cummings's invigorating and unique voice at its finest, and EIMI is without question one of his most substantial accomplishments.

"The mysterious phrase 'I am' in the Gospel of John has long fascinated and puzzled readers. Was Jesus equating himself with Yahweh? Philip B. Harner delves into this expression, particularly where it appears without a predicate, as in 'before Abraham was, I am.' In assessing the background and sources of the nine verses that contain the absolute 'I am,' the author takes account of Exodus, Isaiah, Judaic traditions, the Hellenistic environment, and the Synoptic tradition. Dr. Harner concludes that the term was central to John's theology and was based on a parallel Hebrew expression found in Second Isaiah. At the heart of this provocative study lies the question of whether or not the 'I am' claim is part of the post-Easter Christology of the early church." --

A perceptive investigation into the origin and meaning of the expression 'ho huios tou anthropou' as it occurs in John. This mysterious phrase, commonly translated as 'The Son of Man', is Jesus' primary self-designation; many critics see it as the key to his self-understanding. Yet scholars have come to no consensus on its origin and meaning. The author examines the phrase in John without relying on theories derived from Synoptic research. He concludes that John uses it in the sense 'the Son of the Man' to identify Jesus as the son of the enigmatic figure 'the Man' mentioned in Proverbs 30.1.
