This book is a collaboration of student questions and answers, designed to promote a vision of how this generation thinks and communicates with one another.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 12th International Development Informatics Association Conference, IDIA 2022, held in Mbombela, South Africa, in November 2022. The 20 revised full papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 61 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on​ theories and practices in digital-for-development ecosystems; emerging technologies for transformation, inclusion and sustainable development; privacy and security in digital-for-development ecosystems; human-computer interaction (HCI) for digital inclusion; artificial intelligence (AI) for good.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing and Ambient Intelligence, UCAmI 2013, held in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, in December 2013. The 46 research papers presented together with 8 papers of the workshop UrbAI 2013 were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. The papers are grouped in topical sections on human interaction in ambient intelligence, ICT instrumentation and middleware support for smart environments and objects, adding intelligence for environment adaption and key application domains for ambient intelligence.

The concept of a "smart city" is used widely in general; however, it is hard to explain because of the complexity and multidimensionality of this notion. However, the essential qualification for being a smart city is to achieve "sustainable social, environmental, and economic development" and boost the living standards of society based on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Artificial intelligence (AI). AI in smart cities has become an important aspect for cities that face great challenges to make smart decisions for social well-being, particularly cybersecurity and corporate sustainability. In this context, we aim to contribute literature with a value-added approach where various AI applications of smart cities are discussed from a different perspective. First, we start by discussing the conceptual design, modeling, and determination of components for the sustainability of a smart city structure. Since smart cities operate on spatial-based data, it is important to design, operate, and manage smart city elements using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) technologies. Second, we define the structure, type, unit, and functionality of the layers to be placed on the GIS to achieve best practices based on Industry 4.0 components. Transportation is one of the key indicators of smart cities, so it is critical to make transportation in smart cities accessible for different disabled groups by using AI technologies. Third, we demonstrate what kinds of technologies should be used for which disabled groups in different transportation vehicles with specific examples. Finally, we create a discussion platform for processes and sub-processes such as waste management, emergency management, risk management, and data management for establishing smart cities including the financial and ethical aspects.

Internet and World Wide Web platforms, big data analytics, software, social media and civic technologies allow for the creation of smart ecosystems in which connected intelligence emerges and disruptive social and eco-innovation flourishes. This book focuses on three grand challenges that matter for any territory, no matter where it is located: (i) smart growth, a path that more and more cities, regions and countries are adopting having realised the unlimited potential of growth that is based on knowledge, innovation and digital technologies; (ii) safety and security, which is a pre-requisite for quality of life in a world of intense social, natural and technological threats; and (iii) sustainability, use of renewable energy, protection of living ecosystems, addressing climate change and global warming in a period of rapid urbanisation that makes established sustainability models and planning patterns quickly obsolete. This book offers the exchange of ideas between scientists and technicians from both the academic and industrial sector which is essential to facilitate the development of systems that can meet the ever-increasing demands of today’s society. The 18th International Symposium on Distributed Computing and Artificial Intelligence 2021 (DCAI 2021) is a forum to present the applications of innovative techniques for studying and solving complex problems in artificial intelligence and computing areas. The present edition brings together past experience, current work, and promising future trends associated with distributed computing, artificial intelligence, and their application in order to provide efficient solutions to real problems. This year’s technical program presents both high quality and diversity, with contributions in well-established and evolving areas of research. Specifically, 55 papers were submitted to main track and special sessions, by authors from 24 different countries, representing a truly “wide area network” of research activity. The DCAI’21 technical program has selected 21 papers, and, as in past editions, it will be special issues in ranked journals such as Electronics, Sensors, Systems, Robotics, Mathematical Biosciences and ADCAIJ.
