"Empowerment" can be a mind-numbing topic, but in The 3 Keys to Empowerment, Ken Blanchard and his coauthors use concrete examples, a Q&A format, case histories, and entertaining sidebars to keep the discussion lively. The first "key" is information, which the authors say managers must share liberally with employees to help create a sense of ownership. Next is setting up understandable boundaries that will make employees feel both comfortable and challenged. Finally, managers must develop teams to replace the old hierarchical structure. Ethics and Empowerment is a major contribution to the ongoing debate about the role of business in society. The SWGU believes that comprehensive development and planning processes can only be realised through the promotion of women’s empowerment. To achieve this goal, the SWGU established a coordination mechanism with one of the biggest Sudanese federal ministries, the Ministry for Social Planning (MSP) and, in particular, the National Council for Social Planning (NCSP), at both national and state levels. Through fundamental empowerment activities women not only participated but also lead those institutions functionally related to the National Economic Planning Council (NEPC). Accordingly, all work was harmonised to pursue the set of goals stated in the Comprehensive Poverty Reduction Strategy (CPRS). Since women’s concerns are varied, numerous, and interdisciplinary in nature, the SWGU officially directed it efforts towards the promotion of women’s causes while unofficially targeting the whole spectrum of governmental institutions and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), rather than limiting its efforts by trying to establish a ministry for women’s affairs.

Empowerment of Women for Promoting Health and Quality of Life reviews the evolution of modern Public Health and Global Public Health and the role of women's empowerment for promoting global health. It critically reviews the evolution of global health since the 1990s when the UN initiated the Human Development Approach and adopted the millennial development goals through global consensuses. It analyses the paradigm shifts from disease-based prevention using the Public Health model to a new paradigm focusing on the root causes of health problems globally (e.g. inequalities, powerlessness). It reviews the philosophical, theoretical and empirical foundations of these paradigms. The second section presents our meta-analysis of 86 successful women's empowerment case-studies around the world that address threats to health and well-being of their families and communities. These movements represent four domains: human-rights, equal-rights, health, and income. Using an EMPOWER (acronym) framework designed for the meta-analysis, it answers six questions: can ordinary women organize empowerment movements that enhance the well-being of their families and communities; if so, what are their characteristics; what problems motivate them; which empowerment methods are used and do they vary by domains; who support and oppose them and how; and what are the social contexts that affect their movements. Success consists of: accomplishing the original goal/s, external recognition and/or replication by others, and subjective and objective empowerment outcomes. A summary of each case allows readers to learn directly from that movement. The final chapter critically reviews the key findings, issues and their implications for policy, actions, and research in human service professions.

Since World War II, development projects have invested more than two trillion dollars towards health services, poverty alleviation, education, food security, and environmental initiatives around the world. Despite these efforts, 20% of the world still lives on less than $1.50 a day and the environment within which all live declines dramatically. There are clear limits to what further investments at this rate can achieve. This book advances the thesis that a more effective and universal foundation for social change and environmental restoration is not money, but human energy. Using this approach Tibet recovered from being nearly deforested to having over 40% of its land area protected under conservation management. Using principles outlined in this book mothers in northeast India implemented a package of life-changing actions that halved child mortality. They parallel the way New York City has created a citywide conservation program over three-and-a-half centuries. Each of these examples is particular to its time and place, yet a shared set of principles is at work in all of them. Improving the quality of life for a community starts by strengthening successes already operating. It involves local knowledge and a relatively simple set of principles, tasks, and criteria designed to empower communities. This handbook attempts to address the political and social learning needs of women in Panchayati Raj Institutions in India. It develops thematic gender focused training modules on a range of subjects, including social mobilization and use of social capital formation for ushering development of a network of women PRIs at the grassroots level.
