"I remember the day I lost my spirit." So begins the story of Gertrude Simmons, also known as Zitkala-Ša, which means Red Bird. Born in 1876 on the Yankton Sioux reservation in South Dakota, Zitkala-Ša willingly left her home at age eight to go to a boarding school in Indiana. But she soon found herself caught between two worlds—white and Native American. At school she missed her mother and her traditional life, but Zitkala-Ša found joy in music classes. "My wounded spirit soared like a bird as I practiced the piano and violin," she wrote. Her talent grew, and when she graduated, she became a music teacher, composer, and performer. Zitkala-Ša found she could also "sing" to help her people by writing stories and giving speeches. As an adult, she worked as an activist for Native American rights, seeking to build a bridge between cultures. The coauthors tell Zitkala-Ša’s life by weaving together pieces from her own stories. The artist's acrylic illustrations and collages of photos and primary source documents round out the vivid portrait of Zitkala-Ša, a frightened child whose spirit "would rise again, stronger and wiser for the wounds it had suffered."

Aspiring to share his passion for life through writing and public speaking, Michael reveals intimate details of his lifelong jour¬ney through the pages of his tell-some book, "Happy Endings and a New Beginning." Michael was born in Southern California and grew up with a lot of family around him. At eight years of age, his family moved to Northern California to a small town a couple of hours from the Oregon border. He lived there with his mother, brother and new stepdad in a small town with small town values. Unfortunately, those small town values did not attach them¬selves to every person that Michael encountered. As such, Michael now speaks openly of the many years he endured sexual abuse by several different pedophiles, along with his sexual orientation and the struggles that illuminated because of his choices. He struggled to live two separate lives as he had been raised in a home and church where homosexuality was looked down upon, yet he tried to live his own truth. In order to cope with the mass confusion festering in his young mind, Michael casually began using street drugs, which led him to a fourteen-year affair with those same drugs and so much more. It darkened his life path. At age 33, Michael's high-life party¬ing came to an abrupt end, leaving him hospitalized and sober. He began looking to his Higher Power to sort out his life that was in a state of ruin. Now, years later, Michael shares his personal journey of mayhem over the years, how he met and fell in love with his wife and gives each one of us hope for a better tomorrow.

What sets off the termination of analysis and psychodynamic therapy from the variety of endings that enter into all human relationships? So asks Herbert J. Schlesinger in Endings and Beginnings: On Terminating Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, a work of remarkable clarity, conceptual rigor, and ingratiating readability. In this second edition of Endings & Beginnings (Routledge, 2006), Herbert J. Schlesinger explores endings and beginnings within psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic therapy; both the obvious main endings and beginnings of any course in treatment, and the many little endings and beginnings that permeate analysis. The second edition contains new chapters including one on transference and counter-transference as sources of information about the process of therapy and as sources of difficulty in ending. It deals especially with the impact of prospective ending on the therapist, which if not understood and well handled, might interfere with working through and impede termination, if not ending itself. Another new chapter deals with the difficulties in terminating with especially narcissistic patients. One of the main criticisms against psychoanalysis and the psychotherapies derived from it is that it lacks criteria for when the patient has had enough. Herbert J. Schlesinger shows how we may view the process as a series of episodes each with an ending and possibly with a new beginning. He presents the way patients signal, even before they are aware of it, that ending is "in the air," and how it organizes how they experience the therapy. If alerted, the therapist can make use of these signals to locate self and patient in the process. So informed, the therapist is better able to discern when the therapy should end and help the patient work through the issues of separation and loss to terminate the treatment constructively. All patients tend to end psychotherapy in the way they end all other relationships.
