"The Environmental Codes of Practice for Steam Electric Power Generation - Operations Phase is the fourth in a series of five documents developed for the steam electric power generation (SEPG) industry under Part I, Section 8 of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act. This industry includes fossil-fuelled stations (i.e., those powered with wood, coal, oil, or gas) and nuclear powered stations. However, the Codes are only applicable to the non-radioactive aspects of nuclear-powered stations. Environmental Codes of Practice for steam electric power generation, whichincludes fossil-fuelled (coal, oil, gas) and nuclear-powered (CANDU) generating stations were developed in consultation with afederal-provincial-industry task force. The Design Phase Code addressesprimarily water-related environmental concerns, but not air emissions although water and solid waste concerns associated with air pollution controlsystems are addressed. This volume contains appendices listing task force members, electrical generation and water use data, selectedenvironmental objectives and water quality criteria for new stationarysources, federal regulation of chlorobiphenyls, rationale forrecommendations on once-through cooling systems and wastewaters andmonitoring, and cost implications.

This report outlines environmental concerns related to the decommissioning of SEPG stations and recommends practices intended to provide a framework for: a) assessing the nature and extent of contamination, if any, to be considered in the development of a site decommissioning strategy b) evaluating alternatives for site remediation activity that will mitigate or eliminate the adverse environmental impacts associated with the decommissioning of SEPG facilities in whole or in part; c) ensuring that the decommissioned site is left in a condition suitable for future land use. This Code is intended as an environmental standard for governments, industry, and the public.
