The Scapegoat has baffled scholars for ages. Did the Yom Kippur ritual originate in the worship of demons as modern scholars say? Journey with us through the Torah and the Dead Sea Scrolls as we trace the roots of these ideas. Leaving Qumran, we find our path littered with other extra-biblical documents. We examine the internal claims of pseudepigrapha as well as the commentary of paleographers. Will the vaunted wisdom and holiness of the God of Israel stand the test? Or critical theories crumble like the walls of Jericho?

I grew up in a Catholic family. A daughter of a Catholic Cop. While we went to church each Sunday, we never discussed the Mass on the ride and never discussed it on the ride home. The ride to Church often included Annie hollering for us to get in the car, and many times the ride included arguing, tension, and fights. I never remember my dad going with us. Well, except for that Easter Sunday when my green outfit with yellow Knee-High Socks got ruined. Typically, just my mother, brother, and sister. We were obedient Catholic kids during Mass. Images were important to Annie. We knew when to sit, stand, and kneel. When I knelt for prayer during Mass, I would always peek out to see if others were also peeking or following form. You could say that the outcome of my childhood memories of Catholic church included a tense ride to mass, mastery of Sit, Stand, Kneel, leaving mass early to beat the exiting drivers, racing home, and never speaking of the service.

This is a book for everyone who has ever wondered why pubs should be called The Cross Keys, The Dew Drop Inn or The Hope and Anchor. You'll be glad to know that there are very good - strange and memorable - reasons behind them all. After much research about (and in) pubs, Albert Jack brings together the stories behind pub names to reveal how they offer fascinating and subversive insights on our history, customs, attitudes and jokes in just the same way that nursery rhymes do. The Royal Oak, for instance, commemorates the tree that hid Charles II from Cromwell's forces after his defeat at Worcester; The Bag of Nails is a corruption of the Bacchanals, the crazed followers of Bacchus, the god of wine and drunkenness; The Cat and the Fiddle a mangling of Catherine La Fidele and a guarded gesture of support for Henry VIII's first, Catholic, wife Catherine of Aragon; plus many, many more. Here too are even more facts about everything from ghosts to drinking songs to the rules of cribbage and shove hapenny, showing that, ultimately, the story of pub history is really the story of our own popular history

Most baseball fans know what links Fred Merkle, Fred Snodgrass, Mickey Owen and Bill Buckner. It's a pantheon of public failure. They would be harder put to say what links Eric Byrnes, Tony Fernandez, and Babe Ruth, though these players made misplays every bit as egregious. In this smart, highly readable history of scapegoating, John Billheimer identifies the elements that combine to condemn one player to a life sentence while another gets a wrist slap for the same offense. As it turns out, the difference between a lower-case e in some forgotten box score and a lifetime of ignominy can hinge on a number of factors, including timing, geography, reputation, misunderstanding, media bias, and just plain bad luck.
