The book is concerned with the broad topic of software engineering. It comprises the proceedings of the European Software Engineering Conference (ESEC) held at the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom in September 1989 and its primary purpose is to summarise the state of the art in software engineering as represented by the papers at that conference. The material covers both submitted papers and a number of invited papers given at the conference. The topics covered include: metrics and measurement, software process modelling, formal methods including their use in industry, software configuration management, software development environments, and requirements engineering. The book is most likely to be of interest to researchers and professionals working in the field of software development. The primary value of the book is that it gives an up-to-date treatment of its subject material and includes some interesting discussions of the transfer of research ideas into industrial practice.

Nonlinear Evolution Equations and Dynamical Systems (NEEDS) provides a presentation of the state of the art. Except for a few review papers, the 40 contributions are intentially brief to give only the gist of the methods, proofs, etc. including references to the relevant litera- ture. This gives a handy overview of current research activities. Hence, the book should be equally useful to the senior resercher as well as the colleague just entering the field. Keypoints treated are: i) integrable systems in multidimensions and associated phenomenology ('dromions'); ii) criteria and tests of integrability (e.g., Painlevé test); iii) new developments related to the scattering transform; iv) algebraic approaches to integrable systems and Hamiltonian theory (e.g., connections with Young-Baxter equations and Kac-Moody algebras); v) new developments in mappings and cellular automata, vi) applications to general relativity, condensed matter physics, and oceanography.

The 6th ESPRIT Conference is being held in Brussels from the 27th November to the 1 st December 1989. Well over 1500 participants from all over Europe are expected to attend the various events during the week. The Conference will offer the opportunity to be updated on the results of ongoing Esprit projects and to develop Europe-wide contacts with colleagues, both within a specific branch of Information Technology and across different branches. The first three days of the week are devoted to presentations of Esprit I projects, structured into plenary and parallel sessions; this year there is special emphasis on panels and workshops where participants can exchange ideas and hold in-depth discussions on specific topics. The different areas of Esprit work are covered: Microelectronics, Informa tion Processing Systems, Office and Business Systems, Computer Integrated Manufac turing, Basic Research and different aspects of the Information Exchange System. During the IT Forum on Thursday 30th November, major European industrial and political decision-makers will address the audience in the morning. In the afternoon, different aspects of Technology Transfer will be discussed with the participation of outside experts, and presentations on the future plans for community R&D in IT will take place.

The third European Software Engineering Conference follows ESEC'87 and ESEC'89. This series of conferences was set up by the European societies with the aim of providing an international forum for researchers, developersand users of software engineering technology. The need for a meeting point to discuss new results and useful experiences was clear from the large amount of high-quality European software engineering researchin recent years, stimulated, for example, through major European research programmes. The 22 papers in these proceedings were selected from 133 papers submitted from 26 different countries. They cover a fairly broad range of themes such as formal methods and practical experiences with them, special techniques for real-time systems, software evolution and re-engineering, software engineering environments, and software metrics. Invited papers by well-known experts address further important areas: perspectives on configuration management, software factories, user interfacedesign, computer security, and technology transfer.

The main idea behind the series of volumes Advances in Petri Nets is to present to the general computer science community recent results which are the most representative and significant for the development of the area. Thepapers for the volumes are drawn mainly from the annual International Conferences on Applications and Theory of Petri Nets. Selected papers from the latest conference are independently refereed, and revised and extended as necessary. Some further papers submitted directly to the editor are included. Advances in Petri Nets 1991 covers the 11th International Conference on Applications and Theory of Petri Nets held in Paris, France in June 1991. The volume contains the Bibliography of Petri Nets 1990 prepared by H. Pl}nnecke and W. Reisig, with over 4000 entries.

The Nordic Conference on Advanced Information Systems Engineering (CAiSE) is an annual international conference for users, developers and researchers of information systems technology and methodology. A distinctive characteristic of the CAiSE conference series is the objective to appeal to advanced practitioners as well as to researchers, and to promote communication between the two groups. In this second CAiSE conference, the program was divided into two types of sessions that were not run in parallel: Technical Paper sessions, with formally reviewed technical papers, and Practice and Experience sessions, with invited speakers and panel discussions. The proceedings include the formally reviewed technical papers and abstracts of the invited presentations. The technical papers present important international (mainly European) work in Information Systems Engineering within such areas as conceptual modelling, prototyping, requirements engineering, design support, software process modelling, tool design, and tool experiences. The abstracts of invited speakers' presentations give an indication of current best industrial practice.

The purpose of the Fifth International Conference on Statistical and Scientific Databases was to bring together database researchers, users, and system builders, to discuss the particular issues of interest and to propose new solutions to the problems of the area, both from the theoretical and from the application point of view. This proceedings volume contains three invited papers as well as the other 13 contributions. The papers cover a wide area of research: object oriented database systems, semantic modelling, deductive mathematical databases, security of statistical databases, implementational issues for scientific databases, temporal summary table management, graphical and visual interfaces, query optimization, distributed databases, and economic and geographical databases.
