Unplugging the Classroom: Teaching with Technologies to Promote Students' Lifelong Learning provides techniques to help teaching and learning in an age where technology untethers instruction from the classroom, from semester seat-time, and from a single source of expertise. The book brings together researchers and practitioners from diverse academic fields, including library perspectives, and presents interdisciplinary discussions from both theoretical and applied areas. It is unique in its goal of bringing educators and librarians together to explore the challenges that are faced by students and faculty in any time, any place, any path, and any pace learning. In spite of the fact that the mobile revolution has definitively arrived, students and faculty alike aren’t ready to make the leap to mobile learning. The pressures of technological advances, along with the changing nature of learning, will demand increasingly profound changes in education. Researchers have begun to address this issue, but the revolution in mobile communication has not been accompanied by a concomitant growth in pedagogical resources for educators and students. More importantly, such growth needs to be under-girded by sound learning theories and examples of best practice. Provides a hands-on resource useful to both novices and experts for technology-enabled teaching and learning Gives both discipline-specific and cross-disciplinary perspectives Discusses discipline-specific mobile applications Offers an opportunity to meet the needs of contemporary learners and foster their competencies as lifelong learners Addresses emerging issues in technology and pedagogy

Communicating involves much more than memorizing vocabulary and learning grammar rules. As more and more students whose first language is not English are welcomed into our classrooms, teachers are finding that communicating effectively with this diverse population requires a sensitivity to cultural issues that affect the way people interact with one another. In this revised, expanded and updated edition of Look at Me When I Talk to You, Sylvia Helmer and Catherine Eddy explore the underlying fundamentals of communication to show how culture influences the messages sent - and received. Elements of both the theory and practice of communicating in a multicultural setting are discussed, and examples from real classrooms illustrate the issues that can, and do, arise. Practical suggestions for helping students learn to cope in their new culture make this book a must-read for all teachers working with students who are learning English as an additional language.

Culture Shock for Asians in U.S. Academia: Breaking the Model Minority Myth discusses the unique cultural challenges that Asians face in U.S. academia. The issues facing Asians in academia are worthy of our attention for two major reasons: the numerical significance of Asians in U.S. academia and the fact that their problem has been largely eclipsed due to their visible success and status as model minority. Asian immigrants are often called the “model minority” because of their Confucianist work ethic and emphasis on “ye," or social order, as well as the high value placed on education. Additionally, Asians generally have often been stereotyped as excelling in academics. However, they face serious problems in adjusting to the U.S. academic system. These problems are due to cultural patterns and variables that are largely invisible, yet nonetheless have an undeniable impact on academics. The issues that affect students ranging from kindergarten through graduate school, and that also affect scholars in academic careers beyond the formative process, are reviewed systematically in this book. Analysis of issues is based on intercultural communication theories and suggestions for overcoming these challenges are suggested. Becoming aware of and addressing the roadblocks for Asians is important not only for Asian students and scholars, but also for educators, education administrators, and institutions. Additionally, helping Asians to overcome the challenges in academia not only helps academia to become a more inclusive place where all students can learn and all scholars can work in academia successfully, it also benefits society by producing a more literate, educated, and qualified workforce overall. By promoting understanding of this important topic in a systematic and theoretic fashion, valuable resources can be realized to their full potential.
