Excerpt from German Ideals of to-Day: And Other Essays on German Culture The essays and sketches brought together in this book deal with what may be called the higher life of modern Germany. For even in so far as they are concerned with earlier epochs of literary or artistic development, they consider these earlier phases only in their relation to the life of the present. Taken as a whole, they form perhaps a slight contribu tion to the psychology of the German national mind. Excerpt from Studies in Low German and High German Literature First, in so far as it is English, dealing as they do with kindred or contrasted phenomena abroad; and, again, in so far as it is Literature, for the second and third essays are almost technical in subject. But as these rambles from my ordinary route have been to me full of pleasure and suggestiveness, perhaps there are others who may find in them something of interest. Excerpt from Essays on Goethe In 1822 Carlyle had contributed to a New Edin burgh Review a paper on Goethe's Goethe thus being his first topic as a reviewer. While at Kirkcaldy he had translated Legendre's Geometry, and the translation was published in 1824. He was earning then, for a short time, £200 a year at Edin burgh as tutor to young Charles Buller. In 1823 and l824 - from October, 1823 - his Life of Schiller was appearing in the London Magazine, and in 1824 he published his translation of Goethe's Wilhelm Meis ter, which was praised and abused, and so brought the translator into notice. The Life of Schiller was published as a volume in 1825. When it was afterwards translated into German, Goethe himself wrote a preface to it, and gave some account of the young English author who had done more than any man to make German literature truly understood in England. Excerpt from History of German Literature The plan in preparing this work has been to produce an elementary work for those who desire to inform themselves in regard to the great men and the important works of German literature. I have endeavored briefly to show how important epochs have developed, to furnish short biographies of the leaders connected with these epochs, and to present concise outlines of their important works. For the convenience of those unfamiliar with German, I have endeavored to reproduce a large number of titles in English. A large portion of the book, printed eight years ago, and since used as a text-book in eight consecutive college classes, has demonstrated its usefulness in my own work; and in the hope that it may do similar service for others, I have revised and completed it. While numerous and various authorities have constantly been consulted, I wish to acknowledge indebtedness to Scherer's Geschichte der deutschen Litteratur, and more especially to Konig's Deutsche Litteraturgeschichte and his Abriss der deutschen Litteraturgeschichte, upon which much of the work is based, and from which a portion of the illustrations have been reproduced. Only illustrations of an authentic or historical nature have been admitted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Critical Outline of the Literature of Germany The object of this little volume is to supply Students with a concise and accurate Manual of the History of German Literature, from its earliest beginning up to the present day. The work has not been overburdened with accounts of unimportant writers, or lengthy quotations from the German. English versions have been consistently avoided, the Author feeling convinced that their insertion in a work of this kind is out of place. All the data requisite for the full treatment of the Literature up to 1896 have been supplied. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
