For courses in Career Counseling. A practical, straightforward approach to the competencies required of today's professional career counselors. This comprehensive, top-selling text presents theories, assessments, planning tools, resources, and technologies relevant to modern career development in a practical approach that shows theory and research in action. With four chapters devoted to career development in educational settings, it analyzes the various aspects of career development interventions for the elementary, middle and high school, higher education, and community audiences, and provides strategies for implementing career counseling techniques and creating and designing career development programs. The new edition features a stronger emphasis on the elementary school level, up-to-date coverage of the use of technology in career counseling, including the use of social media for job seeking, and the addition of new case studies and practical assignments throughout. From reviews of the text: "Very good scholarship presented in a concise and informative way . . . . From my perspective, this is the best introductory career development text available." --James M. O'Neil, University of Connecticut [Key strengths of the book include that it is] well-aligned with CACREP standards, . . . connect[s] developmental models with career needs, [includes] programming interventions offered by level (elementary, middle/high, postsecondary), [includes] . . . more recently proposed theories, [and has a] focus on application. . . . The balance of engaging writing style and topical depth is better, in my opinion, than any other career text I have reviewed." --Chester R. Robinson, Texas A&M University - Commerce "One component I really liked was the option for MyCounselingLab. I feel confident students would benefit from this, especially if this course is taught in an online format." --Joan N. Strutton, The University of Texas at Tyler Also available with MyCounselingLab(R) This title is also available with MyCounselingLab--an online homework, tutorial, and assessment program designed to work with the text to engage students and improve results. Within its structured environment, students see key concepts demonstrated through video clips, practice what they learn, test their understanding, and receive feedback to guide their learning and ensure they master key learning outcomes.

This book sets out to provide context for innovating counseling for self- and career construction. It gives readers insight into the theory underlying an innovative, integrative qualitative-quantitative approach to career counseling. Three key ideas recur throughout the book. First, the idea of not dispensing “advice” to people—instead, enabling them to advise themselves. Second, the idea of listening for instead of to people’s stories to help them choose and construct careers and themselves and shape their career identities. Third, the idea of helping people connect what they know about themselves consciously with what they are aware of subconsciously. The book confronts some of the main challenges posed by Work 4.0 on the workplace but also foreshadows the imminent advent of Work 5.0. It endeavors to promote career counselors’ ability to help people “thrive” at a time when many speculate that work itself is at risk, occupational contexts no longer “hold” workers in the way they used to, and the coronavirus pandemic is disrupting the workplace.
