Excerpt from Etchings in Verse Desolation. In the Kingdom of the gloaming Where the days are gray, and dim - Dim, and gray and pensive - Where the dead past's thoughts go roaming Like the fallen seraphim, Once I wandered 'neath the luster Of a spectral, leaden moon - 'Neath a moon of lurid luster, Where the sad lights fade and swoon. And a shape that e'er eluded Waved me on to realms unknown - Realms of shade and shadow - Where eternal silence brooded, And the rushing clouds alone About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Bible Etchings of Immortality A great etching is the product of a grandly constituted mind; every stroke of it has value exactly proportionate to the mental capacity of the artist. I know not how many roses are needed for one small phial of precious attar, but I know that there rises from every good etching such a perfume of concentrated thought that a million flowers must have bloomed for it in the garden of some fertile and cultivated mind. - Philip Gilbert Hamerton. Excerpt from The Etchings of Rembrandt The systematic study of the works of a great etcher is seldom undertaken by lovers of art who are not led to it by the requirements of a critic or a collector, and yet this systematic study, though it may seem tedious to the amateur, and pedantic to the-artist, and though it may be regarded with the most complete indifference by the public generally, has its own rewards to offer in the additional clearness which it imparts to the whole subject, and in the enhanced interest that every separate etching gains from being known in connection with the rest. This kind of study would be impossible for us without the help of the minutely detailed information that the zealous industry of catalogue makers has accumulated for our use. We are, indeed, infinitely their debtors, for without their labours of love, extending, in some cases, over many years, and rewarded only by the appreciation of the few who know all that such toil involves, the student could never gain a comprehensive View of the total production of a great artist. Even if he had access to a complete collection, it would be impossible for him to know that it was complete. Excerpt from Etchings What then has my own business, as I conceive it, been, throughout the bulk of this volume? It has been to make my narration - historical and biographical, critical and descriptive - preserve, as far as one mind can pre serve, a just balance, a sense Of proportion: not to exalt the Old at the expense of the novel, or the novel at the expense of the Old, or the celebrity at the cost of the man of genius who has not reached fame. A hundred Etchers, perhaps, may be named here; and I suppose about half of them - personalities Of mark - are studied pretty closely. It is personalities that are interesting. And therefore never a great believer in the dominating influence Of School, period, or nationality, in Art, whose value and whose charm lies in individual gift and individual utter ance - I have asked myself what was the contribution of each personality to the common stock, and on that contribution my attention has been concentrated.
