Evaluating Health Impact Water Supply Sanitation And Hygiene Education

This handbook provides practical guidelines for evaluating water and sanitation related hygiene practices for the purposes of project planning, monitoring or impact assessment. The main focus, therefore, is on the practical concerns of field personnel working in water supply, sanitation, and health / hygiene education projects. It is also designed to make qualitative research skills accessible to practitioners with little or no previous training in social sciences and emphasizes how to gather, review, and interpret qualitative information. The use of a variety of sources and methods is advocated as the best way to obtain complete and reliable information on the issues under study.

The issues surrounding water services are some of the most critical challenges facing not only the United States, but also the global community today. The Roundtable on Environmental Health Sciences, Research, and Medicine of the Institute of Medicine convened a workshop in October 2007, summarized in this volume, to address objectives related to Sustainable Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Services. One of the objectives of the workshop was to think about the interdependence of environmental health and human health as connected through water. Organizations cannot discuss water without considering the interrelationship of sanitation and hygiene. It is the convergence of these strategies that promotes healthy outcomes for both individuals and the environment. A second objective of the workshop was to consider how planning, management, and interdisciplinary approaches-including technology, social behavioral issues, gender, health, environment, economic, and political aspects-can be integrated to arrive at sustainable solutions. Many organizations and agencies are trying to forge a path toward sustainable practices in water, but the various sectors utilizing and governing water services are not interconnected. More integration and a greater understanding of holistic approaches are needed.

This report summarizes the World Health Organization’s (WHO) global work on water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) during 2022. It describes WHO’s continued delivery of essential WASH programming as elaborated in its 2018–2025 strategy. This includes publication and dissemination of its work monitoring access to WASH and WASH systems through the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme for Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (JMP) and the UN-Water Global Analysis and Assessment of Sanitation and Drinking-Water (GLAAS), continued development and implementation of its norms on drinking-water and sanitation, and overall advocacy including on hand hygiene. All of WHO’s WASH work was augmented through the strength of its partnerships.

This book explores the wave of decentralization that has swept through Latin America and the projected institutional changes within the governments in the region. Although it notes the ways in which decentralization implies a critique of past governing patterns, the emphasis is on such potential consequences of governmental change as the strengthening of democratic participation in government and the improvement of local public service. The book draws upon institutional experiments carried out at the state level to examine which decentralization strategies work best in Latin America. It is organized around three major requirements for the success of decentralization: * Establishing the national fiscal framework * Moving government closer to the people * Improving municipal service delivery. Tables illustrate the shift of revenues and expenditures from central authorities to intermediate levels of government.
