It has been generally adopted as a principle in education, that young children possess scarcely any faculty but memory: and that the memory must be cultivated until the other faculties make their appearance. It is true that children possess less intellectual power than adults; but it is a mistake to suppose that their faculties differ from those of their seniors in any respect but in degree, or that the infantile powers are to be strengthened by neglect.
