"The book draws on extensive research to revise what has been known about Drost's life, his stylistically diverse oeuvre, and his influences. The artist's training and his relationship to Rembrandt and other artists in the Rembrandt circle are examined, as is his Venetian period and the relation of his style to that of German-born painter Johann Carl Loth. Drost emerges as one of Rembrandt's most talented imitators and, despite his very short career, an artist with a variety of faces."--BOOK JACKET.

"For the Winthrop collection's international debut exhibition, curators at the Fogg Art Museum of the Harvard University Art Museums, headed by Stephan Wolohojian, organized the selection and invited more than sixty specialists to write on artworks in their particular area of expertise. Works include such highlights in their creator's oeuvre as Jacques-Louis David's sketchbooks for The Coronation of Napoleon and the Crowning of Josephine, Theodore Gericault's Mutiny on the Raft of the Medusa, Vincent van Gogh's The Blue Cart, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres's Odalisque with the Slave, William Blake's illustrations for the Divine Comedy, Dante Gabriel Rosetti's Blessed Damozel, and James Abbott McNeill Whistler's Nocturne in Blue and Silver. In addition, an essay by Wolohojian provides a fascinating and informative description of Winthrop and the growth of his collection."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. This study explores the interplay between money, status, politics and art collecting in the public and private lives of members of the wealthy trading classes in Brighton during the period 1840–1914. Chapters focus on the collecting practices of five rich and upwardly mobile Victorians: William Coningham (1815–84), Henry Hill (1813–82), Henry Willett (1823–1905) and Harriet Trist (1816–96) and her husband John Hamilton Trist (1812–91). The book examines the relationship between the wealth of these would-be members of the Brighton bourgeoisie and the social and political meanings of their art collections paid for out of fortunes made from sugar, tailoring, beer and wine. It explores their luxury lifestyles and civic activities including the making of Brighton museum and art gallery, which reflected a paradoxical mix of patrician and liberal views, of aristocratic aspiration and radical rhetoric. It also highlights the centrality of the London art world to their collecting facilitated by the opening of the London to Brighton railway line in 1841. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, museum studies and British history.
