Eyewitness New Testament Volume 2

Volume 2 of The Eyewitness New Testament, Michael Phillips's illuminating and challenging chronological journey through the New Testament documents in the order in which they were written. Volume 2 covers the books of Romans, Matthew, Acts 19-28, Philemon, Colossians, Ephesians, Philippians, Titus, and 1 & 2 Timothy. This unique "self-discovery" adventure brings historical freshness to the well-known gospels and letters of Christianity's origins, and continues the adventure through the first century from Volume 1.

Bengel's work on the New Testament is a valuable resource for modern students of the Scriptures. In 1734, he published a carefully prepared Greek text of the New Testament with an "Apparatus criticus," which formed the point of departure for modern New Testament textual criticism. His famous canon was: "The more difficult reading is to be preferred." This critical work was followed by an exegetical one, Gnomon Novi Testamenti (Tubingen, 1742). As a brief and suggestive commentary on the New Testament, the Gnomon is still of considerable use today. Bengel's chief principle of interpretation, briefly stated, is to read nothing into the Scriptures, but to draw everything from them, and suffer nothing to remain hidden that is really in them. His Gnomon exerted considerable influence on exegesis in Germany, and John Wesley translated most of its notes and incorporated them into his Annotatory Notes upon the New Testament (London, 1755). The author argues that the idea of witness is a live metaphor in the New Testament, to be understood in terms of the Old Testament legal assembly, though the Greek lawcourts are also relevant. Professor Trites contends that this idea of witness in relation to Christ and his gospel plays an essential part in the New Testament and in Christian faith and life generally.

Volume One: The Gospels and Acts With typical thoroughness, Dr. Hiebert has produced this volume of his New Testament introductions. Though not a commentary on the gospels and Acts, the book presents their message along with a discussion of such questions as authorship, composition, and the Synoptic problem. Practical suggestions on how to study these five books are included. The bibliographies and annotated book lists are are extremely helpful for pastors, teachers, and laymen. Volume Two: The Pauline Epistles This is a detailed introduction to all of Paul's writings - epistles that without question are among the most precious treasures of the Christian church. Dr. Hiebert discusses the historical circumstances of their writing, deals with ethical problems, and provides helpful general information on the content and nature of the books themselves. Discussed in general and separately, these epistles are treated in chronological order, with emphasis on their eschatology, soteriology, Christology, or ecclesiology.

The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1984, volume 2, contains messages given by Brother Witness Lee from February 6 through 18, 1984. During those two weeks Brother Lee held an international training for elders and responsible brothers in Anaheim, California. The messages that were released at that time were published in four volumes, which are included in this volume of The Collected Works of Witness Lee. The contents of this volume are divided into four sections, as follows: 1. Six messages given in Anaheim, California, on February 6 and 7. These messages were previously published in a seven-chapter book entitled Elders' Training, Book 1: The Ministry of the New Testament and are included in this volume under the same title. 2. Twelve messages given in Anaheim, California, on February 8 through 11. These messages were previously published in a thirteen-chapter book entitled Elders' Training, Book 2: The Vision of the Lord's Recovery and are included in this volume under the same title. 3. Nine messages given in Anaheim, California, on February 13 through 15. These messages were previously published in a thirteen-chapter book entitled Elders' Training, Book 3: The Way to Carry Out the Vision and are included in this volume under the same title. 4. Nine messages given in Anaheim, California, on February 16 through 18. These messages were previously published in an eleven-chapter book entitled Elders' Training, Book 4: Other Crucial Matters concerning the Practice of the Lord's Recovery and are included in this volume under the same title.

The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1989, volume 2, contains messages given by Brother Witness Lee from March 15 through December 17, 1989. At the end of the first week in March Brother Lee traveled to Taipei, Taiwan, and remained there until the end of the third week in March. He then visited Quezon City, Philippines, and Taichung and Kaohsiung, Taiwan, before returning to Taipei at the beginning of April. He remained in Taipei until the end of the third week in April and then visited Seoul, South Korea, and Tokyo, Japan, before returning to Anaheim, California, in the middle of May. At the end of the third week in May Brother Lee visited Cleveland, Ohio, and Newton and Cambridge, Massachusetts, until the end of the first week in June. At that time he returned to Anaheim and remained there until the end of 1989. The contents of this volume are divided into twelve sections, as follows: 1. Eleven messages given in Taipei and Kaohsiung, Taiwan, on March 15 through April 23. These messages were previously published in Chinese and English in a book entitled The New Testament Priests of the Gospel and are included in this volume under the same title. 2. Seven messages given in Chinese in Quezon City, Philippines, on March 23 through 26. These messages were previously published in Chinese and English in a book entitled The Riches and Fullness of Christ and the Advanced Recovery of the Lord Today and are included in this volume under the same title. 3. Two messages given in Chinese in Quezon City, Philippines, on March 23 and 24. These messages are included in this volume under the title The God-ordained Way for the Increase and Building Up of the Church. 4. Two messages given in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, on April 1. These messages were combined into one chapter and are included in this volume under the title Practicing the New Way according to the Nature of the New Way. 5. A message given in Taipei, Taiwan, on April 21. It is included in this volume under the title The Revelation, Vision, and Practice of the God-ordained Way. 6. Five messages given in Chinese in Seoul, South Korea, on April 27 through 30. These messages were previously published in Chinese and English in a book entitled The Ministry of the New Testament Priests of the Gospel and are included in this volume under the same title. 7. Five messages given in Chinese in Tokyo, Japan, on May 3 through 7. These messages were previously published in Chinese and English in a book entitled The Church Life in the Lord's Recovery Today and are included in this volume under the same title. 8.
