Excerpt from Farmers' Reading Courses NO apology is needed for the extension movement; yet there are those who say that persons who will not make the effort to learn of their own volition should be left in ignorance. There are certainly two considerations which make it imperative that such persons shall be taught - the consideration of altruism, or regard for one's neighbors; the consideration or the desire that the State shall prosper. If prog ress is desirable, then the extension movement must abide. Every farmer should be awakened. I suppose that it will never be possible to discover which was the very first reading-course movement for farmers. One can not read far in the history of the agricultural colleges without finding germs of the idea - the desire that farmers be given more and better reading matter. This idea was expressed before any of the agricultural colleges came into being. It was thought, however, that the normal work of the college would spread sufficiently the reading habit. But so many farmers do not go to college and are not touched by it, and so much new knowledge has come into the farmer's horizon, that some special machinery is needed to carry something of the college influence to the farm. This machinery embraces itinerant lectures and experiment station bulletins and reading courses. As early as 1882 President James Mills, of the Agricultural College Of Ontario, outlined a reading course for farmers. The council of agriculture and arts for the province cooperated in the enterprise. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Agriculture and Life: A Text-Book for Normal Schools and Teachers Reading Circles This book was written for teachers. It was written by one who for years has taught Agriculture and Nature Study to pupils of all grades and ages. Most of the book consists of lectures delivered many times before Farmers' and Teachers' Institutes. The book is intended for Teachers' Reading Circles and Normal Training Classes. This book does not take the place of the text-book, such as Davis's Productive Farming. This book is written by one of a large number Of teachers who believe that we should teach from things largely and teach by having pupils do things worth while at home. This book should be of help on the teacher's desk as a guide for her daily work. Agriculture must at all times be closely correlated with the home activities Of the pupils. School Agriculture aims to teach things that are new, are a little more worth while doing than what is being done; that being true, a book cannot present matter for all time and cover our big, varied country. The best things to do will be changing, and hence a book is hardly Off the press before it is out Of date. A book on teaching Agriculture will be valuable for its suggestions and for the enthusiasm it puts into the teachers to take hold of the work. Excerpt from Soils, How to Handle and Improve Them Many of the early books on farming were written in a technical style. They smacked of the lecture room and the library rather than of the soil. They were scholarly rather than practical. A spirit of directness and simplicity is beginning to dominate agricultural literature. The modern type of farm books is born of actual contact with the soil and a desire to be of service to the men who are getting a living from the soil. They are democratic; they discuss common things in a plain way. The long and tedious tables of figures in the old books are giving place to crisp summaries. The technical lecture-room phrases are replaced by words in common use on farms. The idea is not to present less science - for nothing is so practical as sound science - but to present science in a simple and practical way. This new spirit is contemporaneous with the farmers' institute, the farmer's reading-course, Nature-study, elementary agriculture in the public schools and other efforts to serve the man who tills the soil. It is an expression of a general movement which aims to democracise agricultural teaching. This book is an attempt to set forth the important facts about the soil in a plain and untechnical manner. It is not a contribution to agricultural science, but an interpretation of it - a new presentation of what is already known.
