Excerpt from Feminism: Its Fallacies and Follies But while such generous inclusion of foreign move ments, which every American instinctively approves, tends to recommend the home brand of Feminism to his favour, yet it does not clarify his judgment. Other revolts nearer to him concern him more closely. There is a movement of revolt in great cities and smart sets against the barrier of custom which is in terposed between woman and the freedom men enjoy to smoke cigars and cigarettes; a revolt against the custom which requires the woman and not the man to change her name on marriage; which requires a chaperone for girls and young women where no chaperone protects young men. Dr. Mary Walker led a revolt against the custom which permits men, but not women, to wear trousers. Such revolts against the artificial barriers which laws and cus toms have interposed between woman and human freedom are not instinctively approved by Ameri cans, but would come within Mrs. Catt's definition. This study presents a theoretical and practical discussion of the changes that have occurred between men and women and how the sexes relate to one another from social, political, and ethical perspectives. Not only do men and women reflect different gender roles through communication, but they are also impacted by communication about gender, especially from the media. Gender differences in communication have gained political importance due to the increasingly relevant issues of sexual harassment and political correctness. These social and political changes have influenced our value systems and have given the study of gendered communication an ethical importance. Payne argues that religious ideology is an important aspect of gendered development and that biological, psychological, social, and cultural phenomena also affect sex roles. This volume will appeal to scholars and students in the communications disciplines as well as psychologists and sociologists. Organized around three major themes--the construction of the gendered self, the differences between men and women as they relate to one another through language, power, and nonverbal communication, and the effects of gendered communication in leadership and the media--this work covers much ground on the topic of communication between the sexes.

Charlotte Perkins Gilman offers the definitive account of this controversial writer and activist's long and eventful life. Charlotte Anna Perkins Stetson Gilman (1860–1935) launched her career as a lecturer, author, and reformer with the story for which she is best-known today, "The Yellow Wallpaper." She was hailed as the "brains" of the US women's movement, whose focus she sought to broaden from suffrage to economics. Her most influential sociological work criticized the competitive individualism of capitalists and Social Darwinists, and touted altruistic service as the prerequisite to both social progress and human evolution. By 1900, Gilman had become an international celebrity, but had already faced a scandal over her divorce and "abandonment" of her child. As the years passed, her audience shrunk and grew more hostile, and she increasingly positioned herself in opposition to the society that in an earlier, more idealistic period she had seen as the better part of the self. In her final years, she unflinchingly faced breast cancer, her second husband's sudden death, and finally, her own carefully planned suicide— she "preferred chloroform to cancer" and cared little for a single life when its usefulness was over. Charlotte Perkins Gilman presents new insights into the life of a remarkable woman whose public solutions often belied her private anxieties. It aims to recapture the drama and complexity of Gilman's life while presenting a comprehensive scholarly portrait.
