Fields Medallists Lectures 2nd Edition

Although not as publicly well-known as the Nobel Prizes, the Fields Medal shares the same intellectual standing and is the equivalent award in the field of mathematics. This volume presents a selected list of 22 Fields Medallists and their contributions to give a highly interesting and varied bird's eye view of mathematics over the past 60 years. The contributions relate directly to the work for which the Medals were awarded or to the medallists' more current interests. In most cases, they are preceded by the introductory speech given by another leading mathematician during the prize ceremony, a photograph and up-to-date biographical notice.

Although the Fields Medal does not have the same public recognition as the Nobel Prizes, they share a similar intellectual standing. Mathematics has in the main been interpreted as pure mathematics, and this is not so unreasonable since major contributions in some applied areas can be (and have been) recognized with Nobel Prizes.A list of Fields Medallists and their contributions provides a bird's-eye view of mathematics over the past 60 years. On the other hand, it presents contributions from Fields Medallists and so provides a highly interesting and varied picture.The second edition of Fields Medallists' Lectures features additional contributions from the following Medallists: Kunihiko Kodaira (1954), Richard E Borcherds (1998), William T Gowers (1998), Maxim Kontsevich (1998), Curtis T McMullen (1998) and Vladimir Voevodsky (2002).

This book contains more than 15 essays that explore issues in truth, existence, and explanation. It features cutting-edge research in the philosophy of mathematics and logic. Renowned philosophers, mathematicians, and younger scholars provide an insightful contribution to the lively debate in this interdisciplinary field of inquiry. The essays look at realism vs. anti-realism as well as inflationary vs. deflationary theories of truth. The contributors also consider mathematical fictionalism, structuralism, the nature and role of axioms, constructive existence, and generality. In addition, coverage also looks at the explanatory role of mathematics and the philosophical relevance of mathematical explanation. The book will appeal to a broad mathematical and philosophical audience. It contains work from FilMat, the Italian Network for the Philosophy of Mathematics. These papers collected here were also presented at their second international conference, held at the University of Chieti-Pescara, May 2016.

In 2012, the Centre de Recherches Mathématiques was at the center of many interesting developments in geometric and spectral analysis, with a thematic program on Geometric Analysis and Spectral Theory followed by a thematic year on Moduli Spaces, Extremality and Global Invariants. This volume contains original contributions as well as useful survey articles of recent developments by participants from three of the workshops organized during these programs: Geometry of Eigenvalues and Eigenfunctions, held from June 4-8, 2012; Manifolds of Metrics and Probabilistic Methods in Geometry and Analysis, held from July 2-6, 2012; and Spectral Invariants on Non-compact and Singular Spaces, held from July 23-27, 2012. The topics covered in this volume include Fourier integral operators, eigenfunctions, probability and analysis on singular spaces, complex geometry, Kähler-Einstein metrics, analytic torsion, and Strichartz estimates. This book is co-published with the Centre de Recherches Mathématiques.

Covering the years 2008-2012, this book profiles the life and work of recent winners of the Abel Prize: · John G. Thompson and Jacques Tits, 2008 · Mikhail Gromov, 2009 · John T. Tate Jr., 2010 · John W. Milnor, 2011 · Endre Szemerédi, 2012. The profiles feature autobiographical information as well as a description of each mathematician's work. In addition, each profile contains a complete bibliography, a curriculum vitae, as well as photos — old and new. As an added feature, interviews with the Laureates are presented on an accompanying web site (http://extras.springer.com/). The book also presents a history of the Abel Prize written by the historian Kim Helsvig, and includes a facsimile of a letter from Niels Henrik Abel, which is transcribed, translated into English, and placed into historical perspective by Christian Skau. This book follows on The Abel Prize: 2003-2007, The First Five Years (Springer, 2010), which profiles the work of the first Abel Prize winners.
