A classic fantasy/mystery from critically acclaimed novelist John Bellairs Lewis thought the amulet would bring him good luck--instead, it brought nothing but evil. Lewis is sure that Grandpa Barnavelt's 1859 lucky coin is really a magic talisman in disguise. With its power, he could do anything he wante--like get back at bully Woody Mingo. But as soon as he begins wearing the coin around his neck, strange things start to happen. Mysterious letters arrive in the dead of night. A strange, shadowy figure seems to be tracking him. And when Lewis finally gets his revenge on Woody, he feels as if someone else is inside his body, urging him to go even further. Has Lewis awakened a force beyond his control?

Shadow people are some of the most mysterious entities in the known universe, and Mike Ricksecker has experienced many, starting with a tall, dark humanoid figure that appeared in his room as a child. While examining who or what these dark beings may actually be and sharing the ominous experiences of several others, Ricksecker recounts his interactions with shadows, which also include a black mass that formed in a bedroom where a girl had seen an entity with red eyes, a crawler that crept its way around an abandoned desecrated church, and many more. A Walk In The Shadows addresses these tantalizing questions: What are the different types of shadow people and their characteristics? What's the relationship between shadow people and sleep paralysis? Are shadow entities interdimensional beings or, perhaps, players in a simulated universe? Are shadow people evil, or have they been miscast as the darkest of the dark in the supernatural realm? Are some shadow people actually extraterrestrials? What does a renowned demonologist with nearly 50 years of experience have to say about shadow entities? A Walk In The Shadows explores the secrets of the dark while unveiling an enigmatic world feared by many and misunderstood by most.

In most municipalities across Canada, the top public servant is the chief administrative officer (CAO) or city manager. Compared to elected politicians such as the mayor and the council, the work of a CAO is often overlooked and not well understood. In Leaders in the Shadows, David Siegel brings the CAO into the limelight, examining the leadership qualities of effective municipal managers. Using the examples of five exceptional CAOs who have worked in municipalities of varying sizes across Canada, Siegel identifies the leadership traits, skills, and behaviours which have made them successful. Interweaving the stories of his subjects with insights drawn from leadership theory, Siegel offers an engrossing account of how CAOs must lead “up, down, and out” in order to succeed. Offering well-rounded accounts of the challenges and opportunities faced by public servants at the municipal level, Leaders in the Shadows is a valuable resource for academics and practitioners alike.

You're alone, engrossed in some activity until you arbitrarily turn your head. There is a dark figure standing in the shadows only yards away, watching you. You really don't notice until it moves; faster than you can turn your head. Was someone there? You dismiss this as some peculiar anomaly of your own questionable eyesight. Regardless, you can't shake the feeling someone was standing there, Lord knows how long, watching you. For those of you who don't know, Shadow people often appear as the silhouette of a person; presumably male and generally lack any other features. However, there have been recent reports of shadowy figures wearing hoods, fedoras and overcoats. Some even claim to have witnessed dark red eyes. And everyone seems to agree, they are wicked, evil and malicious. However, because there are so many different types of contradicting sightings, the common assumption among non-believers is they're imaginary. Science has even come up with a number of possibilities that explain away this phenomenon. Not accounting for the possibility, under certain conditions the Shadow people can be seen. Currently, millions of people are stuck in limbo with unanswered questions. But what if I were to tell you, many of the Shadow people have always wanted to provide answers! They speak without speaking; they need special people to hear them. Am I such a person? All I can do is share more than 25-years of personal experiences, interactions, gained knowledge and cosmic journeys with the Shadow people; then let you decide. The aim of this book is to throw light on various facets of geometry through development of four geometrical themes. The first theme is about the ellipse, the shape of the shadow cast by a circle. The next, a natural continuation of the first, is a study of all three types of conic sections, the ellipse, the parabola and the hyperbola. The third theme is about certain properties of geometrical figures related to the problem of finding the largest area that can be enclosed by a curve of given length. This problem is called the isoperimetric problem. In itself, this topic contains motivation for major parts of the curriculum in mathematics at college level and sets the stage for more advanced mathematical subjects such as functions of several variables and the calculus of variations. The emergence of non-Euclidean geometries in the beginning of the nineteenth century represents one of the dramatic episodes in the history of mathematics. In the last theme the non-Euclidean geometry in the Poincaré disc model of the hyperbolic plane is developed.
