Often, women are making some lifestyle changes in order to supplement and secure their incomes after a divorce. Some may decide to work long hours or take a second job after divorce. Those who may not have had jobs before the divorce are likely to get one. Many divorced women experience some difficulties in getting employment, or remain trapped in low-wage jobs, and could end up doing two jobs in order to survive. While women experience a decline in their financial status after a divorce, it is evident that there is more to financial well-being than just financial income. Most women who experience financial decline are likely to feel poor; therefore, it is important to consider the factors that could mitigate the financial outcomes if the divorced women are to be assisted.

This open access book assembles landmark studies on divorce and separation in European countries, and how this affects the life of parents and children. It focuses on four major areas of post-separation lives, namely (1) economic conditions, (2) parent-child relationships, (3) parent and child well-being, and (4) health. As each country has experienced spiralling divorce rates and has adopted more liberal rules for divorce, it has begun to be concerned about the social and economic consequences of these changes. The twenty-six eminent contributors to this volume investigate how the new laws work in practice, analyze the societal effects of rapid change, and grapple with the policy implications of their results.

This book considers how women cope with the economic hardship which accompanies divorce, using national longitudinal data on a generation of women in the United States. These women came of age at a time when they were expected to give priority to family roles over work roles. Yet by the time many of them were divorced in the 1970s, with the climate of changing perceptions of gender roles, women were expected to work, and were unprepared for the economic disruption caused by divorce. Peterson analyzes the experiences of women drawing upon sociological and economic approaches to the study of labor market outcomes, and of life-cycle events. He shows how over the long term most divorced women can make at least a partial recovery, but divorced women with children have a more difficult time making work adjustments, and experience greater economic deprivation. Given the continuing high rates of divorce, Peterson's findings highlight the importance of work rather than marriage for women's economic security.
