Flagellates

The Flagellates presents a multidisciplinary view of the flagellates exploring both their unity, in terms of their structure, mechanisms and processes, and their diversity in terms of biogeography, niche colonisation, and adaptations to their environment. In addition, evolutionary relationships amongst flagellates are explored. This is the only book published on this subject and features the most up to date information available making it an essential read for any one interested in or working in this field.

It is not so very long ago that botanical concensus abandoned the distinction that was drawn between Algae and Flagellata, the latter having been regarded by zoologists as a group of the Protozoa. Even today some colourless flagellates may find themselves occupying different locations in contrasting taxonomic schemes. However, modern developments in ecology have placed greater emphasis on functional attributes of organisms, and hydro biologists have certainly been in the forefront of such changes. Thus we find that flagellates are again the subject of controversy, not so much over their taxonomic position as over their functional position - their role in aquatic ecosystems. At the 22nd Congress of the International Association of Theoretical and Applied Limnology in Lyon, France in August 1983, we conceived the idea of a meeting to discuss 'Flagellates in Freshwater Ecosystems'. This idea was approved by the committee of SIL and we arranged for the meeting to take place during June 1986 at Lammi Biological Station (University of Helsinki) in Finland. Participants from nine countries enjoyed outstanding hospitality from the staff at the Station during a week of lectures, excursions and discussion ses sions. Parasitic Protozoa, Volume I: Taxonomy, Kinetoplastids, and Flagellates of Fish contains 10 chapters that first discuss the classification of the protozoans, and then explain the system of parasitic protozoans. This reference material focuses on the significant aspects specifically related to Leishmania and trypanosomes, including the trypanosomes causing disease in man and livestock in Africa, as well as the nonpathogenic trypanosomes of mammals. Marine Phytoplankton: A Guide to Naked Flagellates and Coccolithophorids provides an introduction to marine planktonic flagellates. It emphasizes the biological and physical features that are needed to identify these species, and presents only those methods that are critical for this task while relying on other publications that have extensively covered general phytoplankton research methods. The book begins with an overview of marine planktonic organisms, describing their evolution and classification as well as the difficulties in identifying planktonic marine flagellates. The discussion then turns to marine planktonic flagellates, including Chromophyta, Chlorophyta, and zooflagellates (Phylum Zoomastigophora). It presents techniques used in flagellate studies, common flagellate synonyms, and an index of flagellate taxa. The chapter on modern coccolithophorids includes generic and species descriptions, a list of common coccolithophorid synonyms, and an index of coccolithophorid taxa.
